Stubaier Gletscher

Stubaier Gletscher

Neustift im Stubaital - Tyrol, Austria

Snowboard, Ski

The Stubaier Gletscher Resort is located in Austria, a 45 minute drive from Innsbruck, it is a small resort but is home to the biggest glacier ski area in the Tyrol and guarantees natural snow from October to June, hence its slogan the ‘Kingdom of Snow’. It is a popular resort and was named as the number one family ski area for the fourth time by the ADAC Ski Guide in 2013. It offers 35 pistes over 110 kilometres, served by 26 lifts, including five gondolas and an eight-seater heated chairlift. Although there are more pistes aimed at beginners and intermediates, there is terrain for all, long wide cruisers for easy riding and more difficult steep lines with moguls for the more advanced. The summit of the Stubai Glacier has an altitude of 3.210 metres and from there you’ll be able to experience the breath taking panoramic views from the Stubai Alps to the Dolomites, over 109 3.000 metre high mountains, from the Top of Tyrol viewing platform which was ranked among the world’s most beautiful viewing platforms by GEO Magazine. The resort boasts a ten kilometre long run, from the Wildspitz Station at 3.210 metres, to the valley at 1.750 metres.

For those in search of powder, the Stubai Glacier has 15 challenging off piste ‘Powder Department’ routes which are only suitable for experienced freeriders. The resort offers a mobile app where you can find a detailed description of each route with pictures and dangers and GPS so that you can check that you’re on the right track! Some examples are The Wall and The Cannonball.

The Stubai Zoo Snow Park is one of the largest in the Tyrol during spring and autumn and has various lines, easy, jib/medium and pro, with nearly 40 obstacles including tables, kickers with 22 metre tables, rollers with 20 metre tables, boxes, a couch box combo, a jib wallride and a snake run with a 10 metre hip jump at the end. The conditions are good right from the beginning of the season, there is a new lift, the Zoo Shuttle, so you can get more lines in one session and it gets shaped daily. All of this with fresh DJ sounds in the background.

Thanks to its altitude, and the fact that it’s a glacier, the Stubaier Glacier Resort is open from the end of September to the beginning of June, although the precise dates vary depending on the meteorological conditions. The snowpark is usually open from mid- October until late spring. Make sure you go with enough warm clothing as it gets very cold on the glacier.
