Rodiles

Rodiles

Villaviciosa - Asturias, Spain

Surf, Bodyboard

Rodiles is located on the east coast of Asturias, at the mouth of the Villaviciosa inlet. It uses the sandbank which deposits there and with the correct swell and period, it converts into one of the best waves in Europe. Asturias is a unique region with some of the nicest landscapes in Spain. Rodiles Beach, west of the Misiego Beach river mouth, is where many locals enter the water, and to the east Puntal Beach unites with the spectacular beauty of the inlet.

The Rodiles left nearly disappeared a few years ago when the authorities wanted to dredge the river mouth for the passing boats, however, this wasn’t done thanks to the help and union of the Rodiles surf community. This is a great example for many other waves which for various reasons are under threat of disappearing. If you have the opportunity to visit the area in late September you can enjoy the sports and cultural event the Rodiles Surf Festival, an initiative from the proponents to defend the Asturian coast and its natural environment. It’s a great opportunity to get close to the friendly surf community in Asturias.

It accessed by going along the N-632 towards Colunga until you see the exit for Rodiles which is indicated on the left. On arrival you’ll be impressed by how the whole beach is surrounded by eucalyptus filled forests. It has all the installations you could need like a car park, relax zones, restaurants, a campsite, toilets, showers, changing rooms, a cleaning service, the Red Cross and a rescue team.

Conditions

A left which is protected by the cliffs and has maximum quality with a rising low tide. It needs a strong NW swell of at least 6 feet and offshore SW wind. It isn't bad with S and W wind either. It is without doubt, considered as one of the best waves in Europe due to its length as it can reach 300 metres, for holding a nice shape throughout, and for its barrels which at low tide can be very long.

It can also reach a good size and hold perfect bars of more than three metres. The only conditions for it to work well are that it needs quite a lot of swell and the strong currents that are generated when the tide changes. The most important thing to keep in mind to make your experience at Rodiles a good one is that it breaks quite far from the beach and from there you can’t see how it’s working, so a tip is to go down the San Miguel road that runs along the west coast to see it from there. There is a numerous and respectable community waiting for it to happen. If there isn’t enough swell, there’s always the option of the rights at the east of El Puntal Beach. Remember the summer is the busiest and worst time to visit Rodiles.
