Ischgl - Tyrol , Austria

Snowboard, Ski

Ischgl is a small village located in the Paznaun valley, in Tyrol, south west Austria. It’s less than a kilometre away from the Swiss border and is characterised by the good conditions and abundant snow it receives from the end of November until the beginning of May. With the Silvretta Arena ski pass you can get to the Samnaun station in Switzerland, along with Galtür, Kappl and See. Night skiing is available in Galtür every Wednesday from 19:30 until 22:30.

It’s the largest ski domain in the eastern Alps with 238 kilometres of long groomed pistes and 14 off piste routes. It's the home of the first double cable car in the world, has to two terrain parks, one in Ischgl and one in Samnaun, and is renowned for the excellent après ski.

There are three cable cars that go from the base village to Idalp at an altitude of 2.300 metres, and from there you’ll have access to the other lifts depending on the route you want to take. As most of the pistes are above tree line and the majority of them are north and west facing, it means that the snow conditions are exceptional.

From Idalp, the best routes are to the right of the Höllenkar, the highest and most difficult zone in the resort, and from there you’ll find the long descents to Samnaun. If you opt for the left side, you will reach the Pardatschgrat zone where there are good pistes that will lead you towards various off piste routes or back to Ischgl. It’s advisable to go down the Alp Trida valley along the Idjoch pistes because of the long reds and scenic views.

There is also a themed route called the Smuggler’s Tour (Die Schmuggler Runde). It takes around half a day and takes you to two stations and stops in Samnaun so you can enjoy some duty free shopping. Eighty five percent of the runs at this station are for intermediate and advanced and fifteen percent are dedicated to beginners, mainly around Trida Eck where the slopes are gentle.

Alpes

There are 14 marked off piste trails. You’ll find some good runs off Piste 11, from the highest point at nearly 3.000 metres in Greitspitz you have 11 kilometres at your disposition. Piste 14a is a difficult off piste route with a seventy percent gradient. Piste 4, from Pardatschgrat at 2.624 metres, is a less radical option which takes you towards the Pardorama restaurant.

Freestylers have an enormous area, possibly the longest in the Alps, in the Playstation Vita Ischgl Snowpark. In total it has over 20 kickers from 6 to 20 metres, 30 jib and slide elements including SPC tubes, classic rails and boxes, 2 solid corners, a tubespine, a Big Air Bag, and a Crossline with waved runs and 14 steep banks. The park is divided into three areas. The first is the King-size Park and is where you’ll find the pros training and a long line of 20 elements. The second, Public Park, is open to anyone who thinks they can handle the lines of kickers from 6 to 15 metres and countless ramps and rails. Finally Beginner’s Park has small donkeys and wide boxes for first timers and those who want a more relaxing experience. There is another terrain park called Obstacle Park in Samnaun where there are elements dotted around the piste, including barrels, but this is recommended solely for experts.

Conditions

The ski station is open from the middle of November until the beginning of May. You can enjoy the whole station and optimal conditions during January and February. It’s also when the off piste runs will have sufficient snow coverage. Ischgl often hosts free music concerts at an altitude of 2.300 m with famous international pop stars such as Rihanna, Kylie Minogue, Tina Turner, Elton John and Robbie Williams. The Top of the Mountain Concert is held at the end of November and coincides with the opening of the station. The Top of the Mountain Easter Concert falls during the Easter holidays and Concert Mit is held at the beginning of May when the station closes. As the station is so popular, it’s recommended that you make your reservations in advance.
