Silver Rock

Silver Rock

Parish of Christ Church, Barbados

Barbados is one of the most southern Caribbean Islands and has more than 100 kilometres of coastline and 60 incredible public beaches. It’s a paradise where you can lose yourself and enjoy good flat water and wave sessions. One of the most well known kitesurf spots is Silver Rock Beach. It is located in the south, in Silver Sands and is only 20 minutes by car from the capital, Bridgetown. Next to it, you’ll also find the small Silver Sand Beach which has a park and a picnic area that’s popular with the locals. Although it’s a quite a popular beach, it still has an isolated atmosphere, taking shelter behind the sand dunes and wild vegetation. In the first line of the beach, you’ll find many shops and schools where you can rent equipment, among those is that of the local hero Brian Talma ‘deAction’. Silver Sands Beach has also been the official host of the DeAction Barbados Waterman Festival and a stop off point in many of the PWA World Tour.

The constant side shore wind is predominant at this spot and there’s a reefbreak that generates fun waves. It generally has good conditions all year round, although to be sure of good sessions, you should aim to visit between November and July. It’s ideal for beginner wave riders and the inside of the reef is an easy ride but in the winter the waves can get considerably high. It normally works with N or NE swell and with 12-25 knots of NNW wind. It’s a white sandy beach, the only stones and rocks are at the extremities. There are lots of places to launch and land the kite safely and there aren’t any special places to go in and out of the water but most go in in front of the Silver Rock Hotel or the beach car park. Silver Sands has the same conditions but with less space.
