Ubatuba is known for its versatility and consistency and it’s hard to not find a peak with good conditions on one of the beaches that surround the city. The consistency is excellent in the winter months from March to November, with swells coming from the E – SE, often with 6 feet in the most exposed spots. The conditions are scarcer in the summer and there is a high number of surfers but everything is possible if you avoid the main spots. The main Ubatuba spots are as follows; Vermelha do norte, or Vermelhinha as it is also known, has fast and hollow beach breaks. One of the best Ubatuba waves is at the left of this beach and it works best with E and S swells.

Praia Grande is situated 2.5 miles southeast and is the most popular beach for both surfers and beachgoers in general. It receives E – SE – S swells. With E, the best options are in the centre of the beach (in front of the lifeguards). With S, the Baguari Point left is the best option with its long, quite good quality lefts. Bombeiros, on the same beach, is a zone with rights and lefts which work well with SE and E. Lastly, Rocky Point is a right which breaks with an E swell.

Praia das Toninhas is located to the south and like Praia Grande, it has a variety of peaks when an E swell enters. The right side of the beach holds a better size and towards the rocks on the left side is where you’ll find the powerful Rocky Point waves.

Itamambuca is 5 miles northeast and this is where the most important surf competitions are organised. It’s one of the country’s most consistent beaches and offers all types of waves, from easy and fun 3 footers to quality 6 footers with S. It holds a lot of size and you can surf it until 10 feet. The river that ends in the right corner of Itamambuca is useful for paddling back out. Felix, which is a little further at 7 miles northeast, is a spot for more experienced surfers and the main wave is a left which is popular with the best locals. It works best at low tide with an E swell and it holds from 3 to 8 feet. Lastly, Sape Beach is 11 miles south and one of the more remote spots. Various peaks break there but there is a classic long left which breaks at low tide with S swell.

South Brazil - Litoral Paulista - Sao Paulo

The city of Ubatuba and its beaches are situated half way between Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. Ubatuba is considered as Brazil’s surf capital due to the variety and quality of its peaks, the crowds and above all, its tradition. The most important national competitions have been held there for many years and it’s also the ASP headquarters for some of the prestigious WQS events. It’s situated in the northeast of São Paulo, two and a half hours from São Paulo-Guarulhos International Airport. From there you should take the BR-116 for around 100 kilometres before following signs for the SP-125 towards Taubatė/Ubatuba until you reach the BR-383 which leads to Ubatuba.

There are many interesting places where you can eat and stay around Ubatuba, many places to explore and it’s quite a cheap city, making it a good base from where you can easily get to other nearby spots. Ubatuba is a unique place with spectacular landscapes and white sandy beaches where the vegetation reaches the seashore. The water quality is amazing and there are waves throughout the whole year. There are at least a dozen excellent spots in the area, north and south, and you’ll find something for all levels, such as powerful beachbreaks for more advanced riders as well as small, smooth ones which are perfect for those who are beginning to enjoy the fascinating world of surfing and bodyboarding.

With regards to the history of these spots, the Issa brothers Pablo and Ricardo were the pioneers in 1967 when they surfed Ubatuba as children. In 1968 they went on an adventure and took on Praia Grande, a nearby place which was very difficult to access because of the dense forest which surrounded it. Nowadays it’s incredible how Praia Grande has changed and most of the exuberant vegetation called the ‘Atlantic Forest’ has been replaced by a massive tourist urbanisation. Another great step that year was the discovery of the famous Itamambuca Beach, the scenario which is usually chosen for the most important national and international competitions. It was discovered by these young surfers as they were travelling along the old road which united it with the Casanga neighbourhood. Fabio Madueño was another big name at Ubatuba, he began surfing in 1967 and was catching waves at the nearby Guaruja Beach when he was just 15 years old. Within a short time, Madueño and his friends Livy and Olav began renting out surfboards on Tenorio Beach. It was because of this that the interest in surf began to grow around Ubatuba.

In 1970 the local surfers organised a competition between friends and in 1971, with the intention of continuing the initiative, Pablo decided to promote a competition in Praia Grande with a small advert which read ‘Surfing Championships in Ubatuba’. It was a tremendous success with many people attending the competition and this lead Pablo to organise Brazil’s first Surf Festival in 1972. The last festival of this sort was held in 1987 as after that it became necessary to make it legal to be able to formally organise the event and help the great surfing fever in Ubatuba. In 1988 the Surf Association of Ubatuba (AUS) was formed. The AUS is a non-profit organisation which has the objective of promoting surfing as a sport and lifestyle in Ubatuba. They support amateurs and professionals, promoting the sport as well as training the Ubatuba surfers. The AUS and its members also help with the preservation of the beaches and hold ecological, social and cultural campaigns related to environmental protection.

Surfing is definitely a way of life at Ubatuba and some of the well-known international surfers such as Ricardo Toledo and Tadeu Pereira along with the youngsters Odirley Coutinho, Rentao Galvão, Wigolly Dantas and above all one of the WCT stars Filipe Toledo, have all grown up there. To sum up, Ubatuba and the surroundings has the facilities and possibilities which few places in the world can offer and contrary to what you might think, despite the fact that there are many surfers and over seventy nearby spots, by knowing Ubatuba’s distinct features, it’s possible to surf practically alone in one of the most beautiful places on earth.

Ubatuba is an excellent destination for those who want to enjoy ecotourism. If you like walking in the nature, you’ll have a wide variety of routes, passing through forests and jungles, crossing rivers and discovering beautiful and famous waterfalls which are locally called ‘cachoeiras’. Some of these are Cachoeira Agua Branca, Cachoeira da Escada and Cachoeira do Ipiranguinha. On the other hand the Serro do Mar mountain range, which surrounds Ubatuba together with the ocean, has some beautiful scenery and stands out for being one of the last strongholds of the Atlantic Forest, an area of Amazonian rainforest with tropical vegetation which today is one of the most threatened parts of the earth. The conservation of the Atlantic Forest is vital because it is home to one of the planet’s largest bio diversities and to various medicinal plants which are used in research for modern medicine.

Ubatuba also has nineteen beautiful surrounding islands with beaches and crystal clear waters. One of the main attractions on the coast of São Paulo is the Ilha Anchieta State Park. There are tourist guides available if you want to visit and do any of the following activities; boat excursions, kayaking, Jeep rides or bird watching, which is a very popular activity thanks to the large variety of species. Heading north, it’s worth visiting the neighbouring Paraty, in Rio de Janeiro, where the beaches tend to be more difficult to reach but it’s a more virgin area and home to the Serra de Bocaina National park. Founded in 1677 by the Portuguese, Paraty is a colourful port city which has succeeded in maintaining its characteristics and architectural traditions. You could visit Cachandaço Beach and the natural volcanic rock pools.
