Keramas

Keramas

East Coast - Bali , Indonesia

Surf

The opening of a new road in 2003 revealed one of the best kept secrets on Bali's east coast. A secret so great that the focus of international surfing shifted to this side of the island in no time and one of the best rights in the world suddenly appeared on an island famous for the perfection of its lefts. If there is a wave that is at the height of the evolution of current surfing, it's Keramas without a doubt.

To get there you have to go to the east coast of Denpasar, follow the signs towards Gianyar and look for the 'Doctor Ida bagus Mantra' road that runs along the coast. There used to be a sign indicating when you had to turn right but that has since disappeared, anyway, you will be very close so ask someone, if you are lucky they could even take you to the Keramas beach. As always in Bali watch out for the traffic and always carry your documents.

There is always a high level of surfing in Keramas, many locals and quite often professionals will be there training as for them this place is an authentic high performance centre. The best photographers will also go at some point in the year in search of the latest surfing trends. Each year there are some important contests, one of those is when the World Tour has an annual stop with the Oakley Pro Bali. The beauty of the place, the incredible number of visitors and the quality of surfing taking place make it one of the most prestigious events of the WCT. Given this outlook, be positive and arm yourself with patience and with luck and respect your time will come, you are in one of the most desired waves of today. However, feel free to move around a bit if you're not comfortable there, this beach is very long and there are other good waves nearby. Don't forget to find out how it is to have the incredible experience of surfing Keramas at night.

Conditions

Keramus is a wave that offers opportunities to every good surfer. If it's small it's very rideable and fun and offers some small barrels and kind round sections. If it gets big it changes into a powerful, fast, high level wave where the barrels of some waves reach the inside. In other barrels you'll have an open door in front of you and a perfect section where you can let your imagination run wild.

You can catch waves from 3 ft to 10 ft but from 5 or 6 ft is when they show their true power and start breaking boards. In the rainy season, although it's not as consistent, it's more common to have glassy days or days with light NW offshore wind. The best swells come during the dry season and it's the best time of year to surf before the wind picks up. It's important to keep in mind that as the morning progresses, an onshore wind appears and can ruin the conditions, however, if it is not too strong, Keramus it can amazingly still be surfed.
