Sierra Nevada

Sierra Nevada

Sierra Güejar - Granada, Spain

Snowboard, Ski

Sierra Nevada which means ‘snowy mountain range’ is located in the south of Spain. It’s just half an hour away from the historic city of Granada. The base of the station starts in Pradollano at 2.100 metres and its highest skiable peak reaches 3.282 metres, making it the highest ski station on the Iberian Peninsula. On a clear day you can see the Mediterranean Sea and even Africa from the peak of the Veleta. Sierra Nevada is a modern station with a 103 varied pistes spread over 104 kilometres and 32 lifts with the capacity to move 50.000 people per hour. There is also night skiing available on the Río run.

It has an intense calendar of important events from December until April and it was host to the 2013 FIS Freestyle Ski and Snowboard World Cup Superfinals. The Sulayr Superpark stands out as being the longest in Europe, 2,5 kilometres and 4 main areas adapted for all levels with more than 70 elements including boxes, rails, a line of 46 wallrides and a 6 metre high, 165 metre long half pipe. There is also the new Kidspark for families with young children.

Conditions

Sierra Nevada is the most southern ski resort in Europe and thanks to this, along with its high altitude, it enjoys sun, snow and good temperatures. Although the station usually opens at the beginning of December, most of the skiable areas have sufficient coverage from February through to the end of April. Even during seasons when there has been little snowfall or a lot of rain, the station has been in good condition thanks to the work of the resort staff.

As the station is quite exposed, on windy days, the highest lifts may be closed and occasionally, if there are high winds, the whole station could be closed for safety reasons. The spring snow conditions there are some of the best in Europe and March is the best time to enjoy the off piste skiing and the snowpark. February is usually a busy month as there are lots of Spanish public holidays and it’s when the schools visit for their ‘Semana Blanca’ or ‘White Week’.
