Burnside Skatepark

Burnside Skatepark

Portland - Oregon, United States

Local skaters began constructing Burnside Skatepark without permission in 1990. Little by little, they managed to create various ramps in a very troubled and abandoned area, making it their own. Nothing like it had been made before. There were some places that had been modified for skaters but never before had a group of skaters come together to create a skatepark for themselves from scratch.

Over time, the ramps got bigger and better and Burnside was eventually approved as an official public park and a permanent part of the skate scene in Portland. It gained fame and was featured in the most popular skate magazines and in video games like Tony Hawk Pro Skater and Grind Session. It has been expanded and developed over the last 20 years and is now recognised by skaters worldwide. It is a park with perfect transitions and although it's not indoors, it's nicely tucked under Burnside Bridge where it was built on the east of the Willamette River.

Burnside Portland

The best thing about this park is that although it’s not finished, it’s always being updated. At least once a year before Halloween, it receives a new coat of paint, simple crack repairs, or even something like removing an old element and recreating it. The anniversary is celebrated on Halloween and it’s pure skate with competitions, concerts, various activities and a great atmosphere.

Between November and April is when Portland receives the most rain but the temperatures rarely fall below 0°C, not even in January. It rarely rains between June and September and the summers are usually nice, warm and sunny. Burnside Skatepark has the advantage of being under a bridge so it is not too affected by the weather.
