Mammoth Mountain

Mammoth Mountain

Mammoth Lakes - California, United States

Snowboard, Ski

Mammoth Mountain station is located in eastern California and has embraced numerous skiers and boarders over the years. The high quality snow conditions allow for a variety of alpine sports from the winter until June. In the last few years, the company Intrawest have invested enormous amounts, helping to create big snowparks and modern lift systems. It’s one of the best ski stations in the United States and the highest in California with a huge number of pistes for all levels and 150 established hiking trails.

Advanced freeriders are guaranteed to find challenges and have fun with the 35 black and 22 double black runs, especially Wipeout, Paranoid Flats and Waterfall. Along with these pistes, there are numerous off piste options. Forty percent of the station, more than 400 hectares, is made up of blue runs, amongst these Knee Deep, Exhibition and Powder Bowl are good options. More than twenty five percent of the station is made up of long, wide runs which are ideal for beginners, some of the recommended ones are Big Bird, Easy Rider and Round About.

The snowparks in the United States are renowned for being legendary. For several consecutive years the station has been honoured with the Transworld prize for the best pipe. The various parks on Mammoth Mountain aren’t just for experts and pros, they are all designed to cater for all levels so even if you don’t have much experience, you’ll surely be able to have fun without taking too many risks. The Main Park has three jumps, 24 jibs and a 22 ft halfpipe which is 550 ft long. This is the same size as the ones used in the X Games and the Olympics so you’ll often see pros practicing there. In Forest Trail you’ll find 2 mini jumps and 15 jibs. South Park has a superpipe and 2 jumps along with 8 jibs.

There is also an 18 ft halfpipe in the same area. Lower South Park has a variety of jumps and jibs for intermediates. Jibs Galore, which is sometimes converted into an X Cross course, has between 20 and 30 jibs but you can always look for the extra hidden treasures in the trees next to it. Sesame West has rollers, a spine and a super mini ditch and the Wonderland Playground has a smaller halfpipe, 23 jumps, 5 jibs and 4 rollers. Remember it’s possible for the elements in the parks to be changed.

Conditions

The ski season here usually starts at the beginning of November and closes at the end of June, meaning it has one of the longest seasons in the U.S. and thanks to the excellent maintenance team you'll always find it in good condition. Without doubt, the best time to visit is during February and March when it has the most snow coverage and you’ll have more than 1.400 hectares available.
