Sun Valley

Sun Valley - Idaho, United States

Snowboard, Ski

Sun Valley is in the county of Blaine in southern Idaho. It’s a fantastic ski station with over 75 years of history and a variety of pistes to suite all. It's the quintessential winter resort of the inhabitants of Seattle, Los Angeles, Chicago and New York. Sun Valley has an altitude of 2.789 metres and 830 skiable hectares which include 75 pistes, snowparks and a world class superpipe. As the name suggests, the valley enjoys sunny weather with blue skies for around 80% of the season.

The resort is based over two mountains, Bald or 'Baldy' Mountain is the home of advanced skiers while Dollar Mountain is smaller and is dedicated to less experienced skiers but there are plenty of runs which join both mountains. Freeride lovers can find some good slopes between trees, the best off piste runs with bowls and jumps being below Seattle Ridge. The pistes are generally quite fast and there are plenty of long cruisers. There is a world class snowpark on Dollar Mountain which has a 22 ft Superpipe, a boardercross course with 70 elements such as funboxes, drum boxes, bonks, a jibbing area and wallrides with pyramids. Feature films such as Eye Trip, After Dark and Sunny were filmed there and Burton included shots in Standing Sideways and 13, in which the Sun Valley snowpark is shown at its best.

Conditions

The season begins at the end of November and finishes mid April. Like nearly all of the resorts in the northern hemisphere, the optimum time when there is more snow coverage is usually February, although thanks to the modern snow making system, 78% of the pistes are guaranteed to be open throughout the whole season.
