Snowboard, Ski

Vail is an autonomous town in Eagle County, Colorado. The town was established and built especially for it to be the base for the ski resort. It’s the third largest ski station in North America, after Whistler Blackcomb and Big Sky Resort.Vail has a very quaint European style as it was designed to be similar to Zermatt in Switzerland. Nestled between the mountains, it has become one of the most famous destinations for winter sports in America, offering an infrastructure that allows visitors to use the193 pistes with 31 cutting edge lifts that open up more than 2.140 hectares of varied terrain through the glades. Although the station is quite expensive, it’s worth a visit. The base has three main areas; Lionshead, Vail Village and Golden Peak.

The mountain also has three specific areas; The Frontside, Back Bowls and Blue Sky Basin. The Front-Side contains some of the most groomed runs with nice long cruisers, the Game Creek Bowl, the EpicMix Race Course and the three terrain parks. The first of the parks, which is located under the Riva Bhan chairlift, is Golden Peak Terrain Park. It contains a Superpipe and is where the Burton US Open Snowboarding Championship is held. It also has 2 halfpipes, one with a 4 metre wall and another with 7 metres. Both of these are open to the public when there are no competitions. There are 9 jumps varying from 3 to 15 metres. The park also has more than 30 elements, including boxes, rails and the new Pyramid Shooter Box. The lower part of the park is where most of the rails and long jumps are. The second is Bwana Terrain Park, located on the western part of the mountain, this park can be accessed by the Gondola or Chair 8. It has 2 medium jumps and progression lines for beginners. The third is Pride Terrain Park, located under Chair 26, together with Eagle’s Nest which is a long line of trunks that are used as rails. If it’s busy, you also have the option of linking up to Bwana from here.

Freeriders have fantastic options in the Back Bowls, with a multitude of wide open runs and amazing views. Give the Sun Up and Sun Down Bowls a try. The China and Teacup Bowls contain the only groomed blue runs in the Back Bowls, the rest are more challenging blacks. For the advanced, more challenges await you in the Siberia Bowl and the Inner and Outer Mongolia Bowls. If that still isn’t enough, get yourself to the Blue Sky Basin, under the Skyline Express, where you’ll find more exciting steep, powdery blacks.

Conditions

The station opens at the end of November and usually closes at the end of April but this, as normal, can vary each season. Vail is renowned for its quality and you’ll surely find the station in perfect condition throughout the whole year but to have a guarantee of the best snow conditions, especially off piste, you should visit between January and March.
