It is one of the best spots to windsurf in the Canary Islands. The NE trade winds blow from Spring, maintaining an average of 21 knots until the end of the summer or beginning of autumn.
El Médano Bay has the best conditions when there is a south swell and side-offshore to side-onshore winds. Pay attention to the swells as the waves can reach three metres, making for incredible jumps. The waves are long and you can surf frontside. Take care of the rocks around the bunker and the gusty conditions which can be quite common. There can also be good conditions with onshore wind, along with waves big enough for jumping. If the wind is SE it will be flat, ideal for slalom and freestyle.
El Cabezo works with NNE to E wind, during the summer with the trade winds, and you can sail with side-onshore wind taking care of the rocks during high tide. The wind often makes the waves bigger and cleaner when the tide is rising. To sail at this spot it is advisable to have experience, above all around the bunker where it is shallow and there are strong currents.
Es uno de los mejores spot de las islas canarias para la práctica del windsurf. Los vientos alisios del NE soplan en la isla desde primavera, cuando el alisio empieza a entrar manteniendo una media de 21 nudos hasta el final del verano o principios de otoño.
En la bahía de El Médano se dan las mejores condiciones con swell de sur y vientos que pueden oscilar desde side-offshore a side-onshore. Presta atención al tamaño de estos swells ya que las olas puedan alcanzar los tres metros y podrás realizar saltos increíbles. Son olas largas y puedes surfear frontside. Cuidado con las rocas del búnker y el viento racheado que suele ser bastante común. Con onshore también tendrás buenas condiciones y seguro olas con tamaño suficiente para saltar. Si el viento es SE estará flat, ideal para slalom y freestyle.
El Cabezo funciona con vientos de NNE a E, durante el verano con los vientos alisios, puedes navegar con viento side-onshore con cuidado ya que hay rocas durante la marea alta. El viento suele apretar al subir la marea siendo las olas más grandes y limpias. Es recomendable tener experiencia para navegar en este spot, sobre todo en la zona el búnker donde hay poca profundidad y fuertes corrientes.
El Médano is a tourist area located in Granadilla Abona, in the south of Tenerife. It has many small beaches and coves scattered along the whole of the coast. The Red Mountain separates El Médano from La Tejita, the largest on the island. It’s quite easy to get to as Tenerife South Airport is only seven kilometres away, and there is a motorway and bus service. It’s windy all year round and there are many surf, windsurf and kitesurf schools.
El Médano Bay is a large beach with fine dark sand and good side-offshore to side-onshore sailing conditions. Very near to the bunker in El Médano is El Cabezo beach, where kitesurf and windsurf competitions are held, for example the PWA Wave World Cup. This has two zones, north of the bay where you can surf with mid to low tide and the south zone, where the conditions are better for slalom and waves. You can also sail in El Muelle where the wind is more sideshore, although it isn’t as strong. It’s recommended to only sail with low tide due to the danger of the quay.
La playa de El Médano consta de numerosas playas pequeñas y calas. Se encuentra situada al sur de la isla de Tenerife, dentro del municipio de Granadilla de Abona en Santa Cruz de Tenerife. La Montaña Roja separa la playa de El Médano con la de la Tejita, la más grande de la isla. Es bastante accesible ya que cuenta con el Aeropuerto de Tenerife Sur a solo siete kilómetros, dispone de autopista y servicio de autobuses. Hay viento durante todo el año por lo que encontraremos gran cantidad de escuelas de surf, windsurf y kitesurf.
La Bahía de El Médano cuenta con arena oscura y fina, es amplia y los vientos pueden provocar buenas condiciones para navegar con vientos side-offshore a side-onshore. Dentro de El Médano muy cerca del Búnker encontramos la playa del Cabezo donde tienen lugar competiciones de kitesurf y windsurf, como la prueba del mundial de windsurf PWA en la modalidad olas. Ésta tiene dos zonas, al Norte de la bahía donde podemos practicar surf con marea media-baja y en la zona Sur, donde las condiciones son mejores para slalom y olas. También podemos navegar en El Muelle, donde el viento es más paralelo a la ola ‘sideshore’, aunque esta tiene menos fuerza. Es recomendable navegar solo con marea baja debido a la peligrosidad del muelle.
One of the main attractions in El Médano is its beaches. It is home to the largest beach in Tenerife which is two kilometres long and has fine sand and shallow water. La Tejita beach is behind an impressive volcanic crater, named the ‘Red Mountain’ after its colour, with a cliff of more than 50 metres due to the erosion by the sea. There are protected zones around the city such as the Red Mountain to the west and to the east Pelada Mountain, a volcanic cone with a one diameter crater which is habitat to rare birds.
In the city, the main street runs parallel to the beach and is full of shops, restaurants, bars and cafes as well as many places to rent equipment and wetsuits. El Médano celebrates its patron saint day with parties during the third weekend of September and ‘Picacho’ on the 28th October to celebrate the end of the summer. Granadilla de Abona is a historical city that is just 11 kilometres away and the Teide National Park is just an hour away. The island’s capital Santa Cruz de Tenerife is just 40 minutes away by car.
Uno de los principales atractivos de la localidad de El Médano son sus playas, ya que cuenta con la mayor playa de Tenerife, con dos kilómetros de longitud, poca profundidad marina y arena fina. La Playa La Tejita se sitúa tras la Montaña Roja, una impresionante montaña de origen volcánica de coloración rojiza donde la erosión a creado un acantilado de más de 50 metros. Entorno a la ciudad hay espacios protegidos. Al este se encuentra La Montaña Pelada, un cono volcánico que presenta una caldera de un kilómetro de diámetro, donde también habitan aves singulares.
Dentro de la ciudad, la avenida corre paralela a la playa y está llena de tiendas, restaurantes, bares y cafeterías. Así como gran variedad de lugares para alquilar equipo y neoprenos. El tercer fin de semana de septiembre El Médano celebra las fiestas patronales de la señora de las Mercedes de Roja y el día 28 de octubre se celebra el Picacho, con motivo del final del verano. Granadilla de Abona es una ciudad con mucha historia y se encuentra a 11 kilómetros y el Parque Nacional del Teide está a tan sólo una hora. La capital de la isla, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, se encuentra a 40 minutos en coche.
