Despite it not facing the Indian Ocean, Lance’s Right is one of the most consistent waves in Mentawai between April and October. There you’ll find one of the best examples of the phenomenon known in Indonesia as ‘swell wrap’ or refraction that allows the swell to arrive with all its energy along 180º of the south of the island.

The reef is more than 100 metres in size and for most it works best with high tide, northwest wind and S – SW swell, if the swell is more from the SW, there’s more chance that you’ll be able to link the sections. The first section, ‘the Office’, is precise and dangerous as when it’s between 6 to 8 feet, it creates a huge barrel just after the bottom, creating one of the most impressive double ups in Indo. This is when HTs is most sought after. With 4 or 5 feet it’s very good but it gets too shallow below 3 feet. The last section is ‘the Cage’ and with 3 to 4 feet and high tide it has barrels and is very rippable. However, you should be careful of the sharp reef that’s known as ‘the Surgeon’s Table’.

If you have an intermediate level, at high tide you can enjoy the final sections. In general you should take care because Lance’s Right seems easy when you see it but in reality it isn’t and so it’s recommended to enter with precaution the first few times. With good conditions, it creates large barrels and above all there is no room for errors in ‘the Office’. Be careful if you wipeout on the inside, don’t try to paddle back from there as you’ll get trapped on ‘the Surgeon’s Table’. Let the current take you towards the channel.

Lance’s Right a pesar de no estar enfrentada al Océano Índico es una de las olas más consistentes de Mentawai entre abril y octubre. Aquí encontramos uno de los mejores ejemplos del fenómeno conocido en Indonesia como ‘swell wrap’ o refracción, un hecho que permite que el swell llegue con toda su energía bordeando 180º por el sur de la isla.

Su arrecife tiene más de 100 metros y para la mayoría funciona mejor con marea alta, viento Noroeste y el swell S – SW, cuanto más SW más probabilidad de que se unan todas sus secciones. La primera sección es de ‘the Office’, una sección matemática y también peligrosa, entre 6 y 8 pies justo después del Bottom, ofrece uno de los más impresionantes ‘double up’ de Indo. Ese es el momento más buscada de HT´s. Con 4 o 5 pies es muy buena, pero por debajo de 3 pies demasiado seca. La última sección ‘the Cage’ con 3, 4 pies y marea alta es muy buena pero hay que tener cuidado con el afilado arrecife conocido como ‘the Surgeon’s Table’.

Si tu nivel es intermedio con la marea alta podrás disfrutar de los tramos finales. En general, hay que tener cuidado, porque Lance’s Right parece fácil a simple vista, pero esa no es la realidad y se recomienda entrar con precaución las primeras veces. Con buenas condiciones los tubos son grandes y sobretodo en ‘the Office’ y ‘Surgeon’s Table’ no hay margen de error. Ten cuidado si caes en el inside y déjate arrastar por la corriente hacia el canal para no quedar atrapado en ‘the Surgeon’s Table’.

Lance’s Right is one of the Mentawai crown jewels. It’s located on the southwest coast of Pulau Sipora in front of the beach in Katiet, in a place that the first surfers that arrived there called Hollow Trees (HTs) due to the many coconut trees with hollow trunks that were found lying on the beach. Lance’s Right was discovered at the beginning of the nineties when an Australian called Lance Knight arrived in the small village of Katiet. A local legend, called Hassan, took Lance in and he didn’t just enjoy a warm wlecome, he discovered the best right-hander that he’d ever seen in his life. One day when a boat called the Indies Trader was passing by to retrieve a bulldozer that had fallen into the sea, the captain Martin Daly was surprised to see someone in the distance in this unknown line-up. He got closer and found Lance and his right-hander.

In 1992, the Indies Trader returned with Tom Curran on board and from then, this beautiful place became the centre of attention and professional surfers, producers and photographers started to visit, revolutionising the concept to be had about what was a perfect right in a perfect place, and in turn converting Lance’s Right by the late nineties into a fashionable wave that everyone wanted to see. It can be said that in Indonesia, Nias was the wave of the eighties, G-Land was the wave of the nineties and at the beginning of the XXI Century, it was Lance’s Right (Hollow Trees). For the last few years Lance’s Right has embraced the Rip Curl Pro Mentawai and the best locals and the best Indo surfers battle it out in a show of barrel riding.

Nowadays something has changed in Hollow Trees and your main concern may not be the number of surf-charters that you’ll be able to get, but it will be the level of surfing that the Katiet children have acquired that will surprise you the most as those that had not surfed before or attempted with logs or broken boards, now surf at the highest level and they are the real owners of the peak.

It’s quite useful to know some of the local dialect, this will help improve your experience, especially if you are travelling by your own accord. Once you’re in Padang, the easiest option is to go by ferry to Tua Pejat, the capital of Pulau Sipora. Everything here is subject to the weather conditions and other local factors so it’s better to be patient in Padang and everything will have been worth the effort when you are paddling in the channel and realise that every drop of water was put in place to create one of the best rights in the world.

La Derecha de Lance´s Right es una de las joyas de la corona en Mentawai. Se ubica en la costa Sureste de Pulau Sipora en frente de la playa de Katiet, en un lugar al que los primeros surfers llamaron Hollow Trees (HTs) por la gran cantidad de grandes palmeras con sus troncos huecos que había sobre la playa. El descubrimiento de Lance’s Right se dio a principios de los 90′ cuando un australiano llamado Lance Knight gracias a la ayuda de un pescador llegó hasta la pequeña villa de Katiet. Allí un mítico local llamado Hassan, toda una institución en Hollow tres, fue quien con una calurosa bienvenida acogió a Lance y le abrió la puerta a la mejor derecha que había visto en su vida. Un día el barco Indies Trader pasó por allí para reflotar una máquina excavadora que había caído al mar, el Capitán Martin Daly se sorprendió de ver alguien a lo lejos y en un desconocido line-up, se acercó para encontrarse con Lance y al mismo tiempo a la derecha que había descubierto.

En 1992 el Indies Trader volvió con Tom Curren a bordo y a partir de ese momento este bello lugar se convirtió en el centro de las miradas, empezaron a venir surfers profesionales, productoras y fotógrafos revolucionando el concepto que se tenía sobre lo que era una derecha perfecta en un lugar perfecto. Rápidamente Lance’s Right se convirtió a finales de los noventa en la ola de moda a la que todos querían ir. Podemos decir que en Indonesia Nias fue la ola de los ochenta, G-land fue la de los noventa y a principios del siglo XXI fue Lance’s Right (Hollow Trees). Los últimos años Lance’s Right acoge el ‘Rip Curl Pro Mentawai’ donde los mejores locales y los mejores surfers en Indo se baten en una prueba que es todo un espectáculo del tube-riding.

Actualmente algo ha cambiado en Hollow Trees y puede que tu mayor preocupación no sea el número de surf-charters que vas a encontrar, más bien puede que sea el nivel de surf que han adquirido los niños de Katiet lo que más te sorprenda, aquellos que antes no surfeaban y lo intentaban con troncos de madera o tablas partidas, ahora surfean al nivel más alto y son los auténticos dueños del pico.

En Mentawai es muy útil conocer algunos términos esenciales de su dialecto, de ello depende que tu experiencia sea mejor, sobre todo si viajas por tu cuenta. Una vez estés en el puerto de Padang lo más fácil es ir en ferry hacia Tua Pejat, la capital de Pulau Sipora. Debes saber que aquí todo está sujeto a las condiciones meteorológicas y a otros factores locales, por ello es mejor tener paciencia en Padang para asegurar el trayecto. Todo habrá merecido la pena cuando compruebes como en HTs cada gota de agua se coloca en su sitio para crear una de las mejores derechas del mundo.
