If there’s a good swell when you’re at Supertubos, and you can smell smoked sardines, it’s the sign that it is working. The best time to go is from October to May when any constant front from the Atlantic arrives. Although the dominant north wind makes it cold wind and the water is freezing, with a 4 or 5 mm wetsuit, you won’t be bothered. It holds from 3 to 10 feet, but it needs a minimum swell of 6 feet if it’s NW component and 16 s periods with offshore N winds for it to work. The lefts are normally best. The rights are just as good but shorter, and they are better when the swell direction is more NW.

The predominant swells that border the Peniche peninsula and refract towards Supertubos are NW and WNW. This, along with the special configuration of the seabed that changes the swell direction to SW – NE means it gets sent directly towards the main Supertubos peak where the sets clearly show their extra energy. When there is a big swell and the Supertubos peaks are phased out, a good option to try is Molho Leste, one of the peaks at the beginning of the beach. It’s busy when it’s working but this is because it’s one of the best options. The right peak nearest to the breakwater is good quality too. It needs more than an 8 metre swell and north wind with mid tide.

All of the waves on the beach are powerful and require a good level from 3 feet up. If you have the ability, it’s all a question of barrels. Although the seabed is sandy, the swells are very punchy. It isn’t a bad option when there is a light onshore wind as it is still good quality and it will be a lot less busy. Watch out for the currents and lots of backwash at high tide.

Si hay un buen swell y estas en Supertubos y empiezas a oler a Sardina ahumada esa la señal de que Supertubos estará funcionando. La mejor temporada es desde octubre a mayo cuando llega el swell desde cualquier frente Atlántico de manera constante, aunque el agua esta helada y el ambiente es frio con el dominante viento norte, con un 4 o 5 mm según tus preferencias el frio es lo de menos. Aguanta un tamaño desde 3 a 10 pies pero se necesita un swell de mínimo 6 pies si es de componente NW y 16 s de periodo con vientos offshore de N para que empiece a funcionar Supertubos Las izquierdas son normalmente mejores, las derechas son igualmente buenas pero más cortas, mejor cuanto más de NW viene el swell.

Los swell predominantes del NW, WNW bordean la península de Peniche y refractan hacia supertubos, a ello se añade la especial configuración de los fondos marinos que hacen que el swell tome una dirección SW – NE justo hacia el pico principal de Supertubos donde las series se muestran claramente con una energía extra. Cuando el swell es grande y los picos en Supertubos están desfasados hay que tener en cuenta Molho Leste, unos picos al principio de la playa que son una buena opción. Cuando funcionan la afluencia es grande pero eso es porque es una de las mejores opciones. El pico de derecha más pegado al espigón tiene calidad, requiere más de 8 pies swell y viento norte con marea media.

En toda la playa las olas son potentes y requieren nivel a partir de 3 pies, si posees suficiente nivel para entrar aquí todo es cuestión de tubos. Aunque el fondo sea de arena los golpes son muy contundentes y hay que tener cuidado con mantener alejada tu tabla, un ligero viento onshore no es mala opción ya que hay calidad de sobra y mucha menos afluencia. Prestar atención a la marea alta porque hay muchas corrientes y grandes backwash.

The name alone says it all. It’s clear that this is the best beach break in Portugal and is why Supertubos is known worldwide as ‘The European Pipeline’. You’ll find it in Peniche, 100 km north of Lisbon. Just follow the A8 until exit 14. Peniche is a small village which sits on a rocky peninsula. It was an island thousands of years ago but it’s now surrounded by dunes and beaches. The Supertubos beach is at the south of the peninsula. It’s a place of contrasts where history, tradition, bodyboarding and surfing are mixed together, making it a perfect destination with so many quality possibilities. Even with the smallest of swells you’ll still be able to find a peak with good wind and good surf conditions.

It’s been a part of the ASP, and the Rip Curl Pro Portugal marked a before and after in Supertubos’ history. Since the first edition in 2009, it’s been a fixed host of the WCT, and that was the year when Mick Fanning took victory and exclaimed “It was Supertubos at 8-10 feet, perfect and as heavy as Pipe.” Since then, the quality of the waves and the thousands of people that gather on its sands to see the best in the world makes The European Pipeline one of the most important and awaited events of the year.

The sandbanks at Supertubos extend across the whole beach and when the sets enter, they create spectacular A-frames and barrelling slabs which are similar to Black’s in San Diego, so it’s advisable to take your best pin-tail. This is obviously a top quality spot and the locals are possessive of their waves, however, there are various peaks and, although the locals will be at the best one, you’ll probably see other options if you’re observant. Among the local crew of the seventies were Pedro Black, Joao Coelho and Luis Chaves, they were the pioneers. Nowadays you’ll find legends and great surfers like Jorge Cação, Ricardo Leopoldo and the youngsters António Ribeiro, Guilherme Fonseca, António Henriques and Beatriz Almeida. Of course this wave is an epic barrel where you’ll also find respectable bodyboarders like Manuel Centeno, Daniel Fonseca, Silvano Lourenço and João Machado.

Su nombre deja claro el porqué este es el mejor beachbreak de Portugal conocido a nivel mundial como ‘The European Pipeline’. Se encuentra en Peniche a 100 km al norte de Lisboa por la carretera A8 en dirección el norte, hasta la salida 14. Peniche es una pequeña localidad enclavada sobre una península rocosa que hace miles de años fue una isla y que ahora esta unida a la costa rodeada de dunas y playas. Al sur de esta península se extiende la playa de Supertubos, un lugar de contrastes donde se respira la más antigüa tradición junto con el buen surfing y el mejor bodyboarding de Portugal, un destino perfecto que dispone de muchas posibilidades y calidad por todos lados, aquí siempre que haya un mínimo de swell podrás encontrar un pico con buen viento donde poder entrar al agua con buenas condiciones.

De ello se han dado cuenta en la ASP y El ‘Rip Curl Pro Portugal’ ha marcado un antes y un después en la historia de Supertubos, desde la primera edición de 2009 es una sede fija del WCT, en ese año Mick Fanning se llevó la victoria y exclamo ‘It was Supertubes at 8-10 feet, perfect and heavy as Pipe’ desde entonces por la calidad de las olas se reunen miles de personas para ver a los mejores del mundo haciendo que el Pipeline Europeo sea uno de los eventos más importantes y esperados del año.

En Supertubos los bancos de arena se extienden a lo largo de toda la playa creando espectaculares A-frames y tubos similares a Black’s en San Diego, un buen consejo será traer un pin-tail. En este lugar la es calidad máxima y por ello el localismo es intenso y celoso de sus olas, sin embargo, hay varios picos y los locales aunque estarán en el pico de más calidad, probablemente si eres observador veras otras opciones. Entre la crew local desde los setenta hay que nombrar algunos como Pedro Black, Joao Coelho, Luis Chaves que fueron los pioneros, actualmente te encontrarás míticos y buenos surfers como Jorge Cação, Ricardo Leopoldo y los jóvenes Antonio Ribeiro, Guilherme Fonseca e António Henriques y Beatriz Almeida. Por supuesto esta ola es un tubazo donde no falta un respetado grupo de bodyboarders entre los que se encuentran Manuel Centeno, Daniel Fonseca, Silvano Lourenço o João Machado.
