Sultans is a mechanical wave that can hold various sizes. It has a comfortable take off with a fast first section, followed by a second section which has very good shape and long walls for manoeuvres. The successive swells from the southeast arrive and the northwest offshore wind predominates from May until October. It holds perfectly from four to eight feet and is best when it’s glassy in the mornings, it’s pure ecstasy. In the first section you should pay attention at low tide because it’s a fast barrel which requires level for the inside.

Sultans es una ola mecánica que aguanta bien varios tamaños, posee un take off cómodo, una rápida primera sección a la que sigue una segunda más suave pero con suficiente choque. La temporada empieza de mayo hasta octubre, cuando entran sucesivos swells del sureste y predomina el viento offshore de NW. Aguanta perfecta desde los cuatro hasta ocho pies, lo mejor sin duda glassy por las mañanas. Hay que prestar atención a la marea baja porque la primera sección es un rápido tubo que en el inside exige nivel.

The righhander Sultans is in one of the most heavenly places in the world, the Maldives. It’s located off the uninhabited Thamburudhoo Island which forms part of the North Male atoll. There, at the arrowhead-shaped island that is surrounded by reef and points towards the southeast, is where you’ll find the Sultans right and the good left, Honkey’s. This wave is good for almost everybody. The break on the outside isn’t for beginners, but it’s amazing for those that are progressing. The peak is sometimes very crowded, precisely because it’s one of the best waves and one of the few that along with Honkey’s, Jailbreaks, Cokes and Chickens, remains an unrestricted zone in the North Male atoll.

The atmosphere is normally relaxed because Sultans and Honkey’s are two line-ups which are very close together and they can withstand a lot of people. This island, in the heart of the surf in the Maldives is involved in a future project which intends to privatise the island and its waves. However, there is a big movement called Save Thamburudhoo which isn’t in agreement with this privatisation, and expresses that these initiatives destroy the principles of the sport, the culture and don’t help the local population who in any case, are those that should profit from its resources.

La derecha de Sultans está en Maldivas, el auténtico paraíso al que el resto intenta parecerse y que se encuentra en mitad del norte del Oceano Índico. Se ubica concretamente en la isla de Thamburudhoo formando parte del atolón de Male Norte, allí en el centro de un gran arrecife orientado como si fuera la punta de una flecha hacia el Sureste se encuentran hermanadas la derecha de Sultans y la buena izquierda de Honkey’s. Esta es una ola que se adapta a todos desde un nivel intermedio, el pico en el outside no es para principiantes, sin embargo es muy bueno para los que ya tienen un nivel intermedio y quieren tener sus primeras experiencias con fondos de coral.

En ocasiones el pico estará saturado debido precisamente a que es una de las mejores olas y de las pocas que junto a Honkies, Jailbreaks, Coke’s and Chickens aún es libre de apropiaciones privadas en el atolón de Male norte. De todas formas normalmente el ambiente es relajado porque Sultans y Honkey’s son dos line-up muy cercanos y aguantan bastante gente. Esta isla en el corazón del surfing de Maldivas está involucrada en un proyecto futuro que pretende privatizar la isla y con ello sus olas. Sin embargo, existe un fuerte movimiento llamado ‘Save Thamburudhoo’ que no está de acuerdo con esta privatización, expresando que estas iniciativas destruyen los principios del deporte, la cultura y que no ayudan a la población local que es la que en todo caso debiera sacar beneficio de sus recursos.
