In Tarifa, the wind is practically guaranteed throughout the whole year. The annual percentage of windy days with more than 4 on the Beaufort scale (11-17 knots) is approximately 80%. From December to February, the Poniente (W) wind prevails and during the summer months, from June to August, the Levante (E) wind prevails and blows strongly in the Strait of Gibraltar. Valdevaqueros or The Dunes is the most well-known spot in Tarifa and it’s always packed during the summer as it works nearly every day. With Levante (E) it can get gusts of 40 knots, usually blowing side-offshore with around 5 to 20 knots. With Poniente (W) it’s normally very strong and it can often be gusty due to the sand dunes. When in Tarifa and there is no wind, you can be pretty sure that there will be enough wind at Valdevaqueros due to the thermal winds which are produced because of the temperature difference between the cold water and heat of the dunes. The Balneario zone is a spot for experts. It works with Levante (E, reaching between 15-30 knots.

The winds blows offshore and is slightly gusty but the water stays completely flat. The only danger is that there’s no rescue boat so if you need to release the kite you’ll have to swim back. It’s also prohibited to sail there during July and August. The al-Jaima or Campo de fútbol is another spot for days with Poniente in the winter. The wind is normally side-onshore between 18 and 25 knots and leaves flat water between the small waves. On stormy days there can be up to three metre waves. This spot is also prohibited during the summer. It’s the access point for the famous lagoon which is ten minutes upwind. It usually works during high tide.

Dos Mares is the largest and most popular beach in the summer so it has a large area dedicated to kitesurfing. The wind is usually side-onshore, Poniente (E, between 15 and 25 knots, and the water can be choppy. Arte Vida works in the summer and the winter. It receives Poniente (E) and is a little more side shore. It can generate waves of up to 3 metres, above all in the winter and it’s the windsurfers’ favourite spot.

En Tarifa, el viento está prácticamente garantizado durante todo el año. El porcentaje de días de viento con fuerza de más de 4 Beaufort, que alcanza de entre 11 a 17 nudos es de un 80% anual. Desde Diciembre a Febrero, predomina el viento de poniente, componente W. Y durante los meses de verano, de Junio a Agosto destaca el viento de levante, componente E, que sopla con fuerza en las aguas del Estrecho de Gibraltar. Tarfia cuenta con diferentes spot que se comportan con condiciones diferentes según el viento y la época del año.

Valdevaqueros o Las Dunas es el spot de Tarifa más conocido, está siempre repleto en verano porque funciona casi todos los días. Con viento de levante alcanza rachas de 40 nudos, suele ser side-off y normalmente el viento sopla constante de 15 a 20 nudos. Cuando el viento es de componente W, poniente, es muy fuerte y suele entrar racheado por las dunas de arenas. Cuando en Tarifa el viento no sopla prácticamente nada, Valdevaqueros cuenta con viento suficiente debido a que el viento térmico que se produce por la diferencia de temperatura entre el agua fría del mar y el calor de las dunas.

La zona de Balneario es un spot para expertos, funciona con viento de levante, componente E, alcanzando entre 15 y 30 nudos. El viento entra off-shore y un poco racheado, pero el agua se queda flat. En esta playa no hay barco de rescate por lo que si tienes que soltar la cometa debes volver nadando. Durante los meses de Julio y Agosto está prohibido navegar. La zona de la al-Jaima o campo de fútbol de Tarifa, es otro spot para los días de poniente en invierno. El viento, normalmente sopla entre 18 y 25 nudos, entra side-on y con el agua plana entre las olas de pequeño tamaño. Aunque los días de borrasca las olas pueden alcanzar hasta los tres metros. También es un spot prohibido en los meses de verano. Es el punto de acceso a la famosa Charca de Tarifa, que está a diez minutos upwind. Suele funcionar, también en invierno con marea alta.

Dos Mares es la playa más extensa y utilizada en verano, ya que cuenta con una zona autorizada para el kitesurf. El viento suele ser side-on y funciona con viento de poniente, componente W. El viento suele soplan entre 15 y 25 nudos, y hay algo de choppy. Arte Vida funciona en verano e invierno. El viento es de poniente y un poco más side-shore, se suelen formar olas de hasta tres metros, sobre todo en invierno, en este spot encontrarás bastantes windsurfistas.

Tarifa is one of the most important destinations in Europe with regards to wind sports. It’s a town in the province of Cádiz, Andalucía and is located at the southernmost point of Europe, nearest to Africa in the Strait of Gibraltar. The good strategic location has meant that the town has been home to various cultures which have left an indelible architectural and cultural imprint. Tarifa enjoys an exceptional climate all year round, with mild temperatures in the winter and warm weather in the summer. The average annual temperature is 18º C and it has 250 windy days a year.

The wind is constant and its spots, which are known worldwide, embrace many riders. It has lovely white sandy beaches like Los Lances, Bolonia, Valdevaqueros and Punta Paloma; all with crystal clear waters. The main reason that Tarifa is a kitesurf mecca is because of its location on the border bewteen Europe and Africa in the Strait of Gibraltar where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Mediterranean Sea. This geographic situation means that the strait acts as a funnel where the E and W winds meet. The Levante wind, E – SE component, is stronger, hotter and gustier whereas the Poniente wind, W component, comes from the Atlantic and is colder and less gusty.

Tarifa uno de los destinos más importantes de Europa en cuanto a deportes de viento se refiere, es un pueblo de la provincia de Cádiz que se sitúa en el punto más meridional del continente europeo, el más cercano a África en el Estrecho de Gibraltar. Cuenta con hermosas playas de arena blanca como: Los Lances, Bolonia, Valdevaqueros o Punta Paloma; todas con aguas increíblemente cristalinas. La principal razón que hace que Tarifa sea una meca del Kitesurf es su localización en el estrecho de Gibraltar donde se unen el Océano Atlántico con el Mar Mediterráneo, además es la frontera entre Europa y África. Esta situación geográfica hace que el estrecho se comporte como un embudo donde los vientos del E y el W confluyen. El viento de levante, de componente E – SE, es el viento más fuerte, cálido y racheado. Por otro lado el viendo e poniente, componente W, procede del Atlántico es más frio y limpio.
