The skate plaza is in good condition since resistant and quality materials were used in the expansion by California Skateparks. The marble ledges and hubbas are a delight to side and grind on. The climate in Kimberley is basically continental, it has hot and humid summers from December to February and dry winters from June to August. Rainfall in the summer is rare and tends to be occasional storms rather than prolonged showers.
El skate plaza se encuentra en buen estado, ya que en la ampliación llevada a cabo por California Skateparks se utilizaron materiales resistentes y de calidad. El mármol de los bordillos y hubbas es una delicia para deslizar. El clima en Kimberley es básicamente continental, hay veranos cálidos y húmedos de diciembre a febrero, y los inviernos secos de junio a agosto. Las lluvias de verano son poco frecuentes y suelen ser fuertes tormentas ocasionales en lugar de suaves lluvias prolongadas.
Kumba Skate Plaza is in the city of Kimberley, in the Northern Cape Province, South Africa. Known for hosting the international event, The Maloof Money Cup, it was reconstructed in the year 2011 by California Skateparks for this event, and was later replaced by the similar and equally relevant Kimberley Diamond Cup.
Joe Ciaglia from California Skateparks and the pro skater Geoff Rowley re-designed the plaza and made it into a diamond shape, given that Kimberley is also known as Diamond City. At one end it has a raised part where you’ll find a manni pad with a ramp and smooth hubbas each side, a set of 5 stairs with rails, hubbas and low to high ledges. There are also four blocks with a rail and a bigger hubba. In the centre there is a funbox rail, a flat rail and ledges. At the other end of the plaza there are quarters and banks to continue making lines. There are also stands for the public around the street zone and a halfpipe and a mini ramp outside.
The park usually has some sort of activity on every day, above all at the weekends. In fact, the manager of the plaza and the two assistants offer free classes for all levels at the weekends, encouraging everyone, especially the youngsters. For those that don’t have equipment, they can lend or donate a board to you, depending on your circumstances. The Kimberley Diamond Cup is possible thanks to the mining company, Kumba Iron Ore and the association of the Northern Cape government. The event attracts skaters from all over the world every year and merges parallel events and concerts.
Kumba Skate Plaza se encuentra en la ciudad de Kimberley, en Northern Cape Province, Sudáfrica. Conocido por albergar el evento internacional The Maloof Money Cup, fue reconstruido en el año 2011 por California Skatepark con motivo de dicho evento, el cual, más tarde, sería reemplazado por Kimberley Diamond Cup, de las mismas características e igualmente relevante.
Joe Ciaglia de California Skateparks y el pro-skater Geoff Rowley diseñaron las remodelaciones de este parque, dándole forma de diamante, puesto que Kimberley también se conoce como ‘Diamond City’, la ciudad del diamante. En un extremo posee una elevación en la que se puede encontrar un manni pad en bajada con suaves hubbas a los lados, un set de cinco escaleras con rails, hubbas y bordillos low to high. También hay cuatro gradas con un rail y hubba algo más grandes. En el centro hay un funbox rail, flat rail y bordillos. En el otro extremo hay quarters y Banks para seguir haciendo líneas. Rodeando la zona de Street hay gradas para el público y por fuera hay un Half pipe y una mini ramp.
El parque suele tener actividad durante todos los días, pero sobre todo los fines de semana. De hecho, el gerente del skate plaza y dos asistentes ofrecen clases gratuitas los fines de semana para todos los niveles, animando a todos y en especial a los jóvenes. Para aquellos que no disponen de material, los patines pueden ser prestados o donados, dependiendo de sus circunstancias. El campeonato Kimberley Diamond Cup es posible gracias a la compañía minera Kumba Iron Ore en asociación con el Gobierno de Northern Cape. Este evento atrae a skaters de todas partes del mundo cada año y confluye en eventos paralelos y conciertos.
You can go by plane as Kimberley Airport is just seven kilometres away from the city centre. The skate plaza is next to one of the main attractions in the city, The Big Hole, an enormous hole which gives it the name Diamond City. Derived from the mine, The Big Hole is known for being the biggest excavation done by hand in the world. It’s filled with water to form a lake at the bottom, with a surface area of 17 hectares, 463 metres wide and 215 metres deep and you’ll find a world class tourist centre, the Kimberley Diamond Mine Museum, there. Another place to visit could be the famous McGregor Museum, where you can see the archaeological discoveries from the area and a variety of artwork. You can also see flamingos on the Joburg Walk, one of the biggest gatherings of flamingos in Africa. These birds have recently began to breed on the artificial islands of Kamfersdam.
Se puede llegar en avión ya que cuenta con el Aeropuerto de Kimberley a tan sólo siete kilómetros del centro de la ciudad. El skate plaza se encuentra junto a uno de los mayores atractivos de la ciudad de Kimberley, The Big Hole este enorme agujero da el sobrenombre de ‘Diamond City’. Derivado de la minería, The Big Hole se conoce como la mayor excavación a mano del mundo. Se encuentra lleno de agua formando un lago en el fondo, con una superficie de 17 hectáreas, con 463 metros de ancho y 215 metros de profundidad. En este lugar se encuentra un centro turístico de clase mundial, Kimberley Diamond Mine Museum. Otro lugar para visitar puede ser el famoso Museo McGregor donde se pueden apreciar colecciones de hallazgos arqueológicos de la zona y variedad en obras de arte. También pueden verse flamencos en el Camino Joburg. Una de las mayores reuniones de dichas aves en África, las cuales han comenzado recientemente a reproducirse en islas artificiales de Kamfersdam.
