Barra needs a big swell for it to be working. It’s worth knowing that with good conditions, 10 feet at Puerto Escondido is the equivalent of 3 feet at Barra. The chances are you won’t get a repetition of the conditions from that legendary event in 2006 but with a strong swell and above all a high period, there’ll be quality waves. The best swells come in spring, summer and autumn. Barra works with various swell components, S-SW, and although it’s better when it’s glassy, the N-NW breezes don’t ruin things. You can catch waves from 3 feet but Barra works from 6 feet and with a rising low tide.

With regards to the dynamics of this right, there are sometimes currents at the take off zone that make the drop in difficult. The first section is hollow, then there are concave sections until the inside where the wave often ends with a barrel. The condition of the seabed here is crucial, like most of the bars with sand bottoms in Mexico. This situation is favoured in the rainy season when the rivers deposit sediments that benefit the state of the seabed and therefore, the wave dynamics. The paddle back from the inside is difficult so if the wave leaves you quite far away, it’s better to walk back along the beach and re-enter carefully by the rocks.

Será difícil que se repitan las condiciones de aquel mítico evento de 2006, pero con un fuerte swell y sobretodo alto periodo habrá olas de calidad. Los mejores swell entran en primavera, verano y otoño. La barra funciona con swell S o SW y aunque lo mejor es glassy el viento N-NW es bueno, se pueden coger olas desde 3 pies pero la barra funciona con 6 pies y con marea baja subiendo.

En cuanto a la dinámica de esta derecha, en la zona de take off a veces hay corrientes que dificultan el drop in. La primera sección es hueca pasando a secciones cóncavas hasta el inside donde la ola suele acabar con tubo. El estado de los fondos es aquí trascendental como en todas las barras de fondo de arena de Mexico. Esta situación es favorecida en época de lluvias cuando los ríos depositan sedimentos que benefician el buen estado de los fondos y, por tanto, a la buena dinámica de la ola. Las remadas desde el inside son duras así que si tu ola te deja lejos será mucho mejor volver a pie por la playa y entrar cuidadosamente cerca de las rocas hacia el pico.

The Barra de la Cruz right is located on the edge of the Sierra Madre, in the state of Oaxaca, South Mexico. Land of the ancient Zapotec culture, surrounded by a jungle landscape that gives you the impression of being trapped in time. To get to Barra de la Cruz, the best way is to fly to Santa Maria de Huatulco Airport and rent a vehicle so that you can go to most of the spots that are accessible from different points along the Federal 200 Road. The construction of this Federal road was a major development in communications for the whole of the Pacific coast and Barra de la Cruz is now just over 30 minutes away from Huatulco Airport in the direction of Salina Cruz.

Barra de la Cruz sits behind the hills and isn’t visible from the beach, which is accessed by a typical dirt road. It’ll be easy to find accommodation around the village but it’s important to take useful items such as medicine with you, and above all keep in mind that the best season for waves is the rainy season so make sure you take lots of insect repellent. The advantage of this right is that it remains unspoilt despite it not being far from the tourist areas in Huatulco Bay. It’s currently one of the most important spots along Mexico’s Pacific coast and it’s relatively near, a little more than an hour and a half away from the barrels at Zicatela Beach in Puerto Escondido so the locals often travel there, however, if it gives the right conditions at Barra, logically, many surfers go to there instead, so being respectful and patient is the key like anywhere else in the world. If there aren’t good waves, it wouldn’t be bad to go for the Oaxaca style Tequila mescal. In this place of secrets, it’s better to go with the flow because you can’t look for the waves, you find them by chance.

In June 2006, a Rip Curl Pro Search event was held with tremendous success and was followed internationally by the media and surfers. The right surpassed all expectations. But we must be objective and say that they were lucky that just on those days, the necessary circumstances came together to produce the perfect right. During the competition, Mick Fanning compared it to Kirra during its best years and said “I was going inside barrels the whole time and losing my mind”, the ‘King’ Kelly Slater said “The circuit needed something like this” and winner of the final, the legend Andy Irons, said “The best event in years”.

La derecha de Barra de la Cruz se sitúa al borde de Sierra Madre, al Sur de Mexico en el Estado de Oaxaca, tierra de la antigua cultura Zapoteca y rodeada de un paisaje selvático que parece haberse quedado atrapado en el tiempo. Para llegar a Barra de la Cruz la mejor opción es ir en avión hasta el aeropuerto de Santa María de Huatulco, una vez allí alquilar un vehículo para poder llegar a la mayoría de los spots a los que se accede desde algún punto de la Carretera Federal 200. La construcción de esta Carretera Federal significa el eje de comunicación más importante de toda la costa del pacifico y sitúa a Barra de la Cruz a poco más de 30 minutos del Aeropuerto de Huatulco en dirección hacia Salina Cruz.

El pueblo de Barra De La Cruz queda detrás del cerro y no se ve desde la playa a la que bajas por el mismo camino de tierra de siempre. Te resultará fácil encontrar acomodación alrededor del pueblo pero es importante que traigas contigo útiles cotidianos, medicinas y sobretodo tener en cuenta que la mejor época de olas también es la de lluvias y por ello es obligatorio cargarse con repelente de insectos. Es una gran ventaja que esta barra de derecha aún se mantiene virgen a pesar de que no se encuentra muy lejos de las turísticas Bahías de Huatulco. Actualmente este es uno de los spots más importantes de toda la costa Pacífica Mexicana, se sitúa relativamente cerca, a poco más de hora y media de los tubos de Zicatela en Puerto Escondido, esto significa que si se dan las condiciones adecuadas lógicamente serán muchos los que bajen desde puerto a surfear a Barra, siendo el respeto y el saber estar una máxima como en cualquier otro lugar del mundo. Tan solo recordar que si no hay buenas olas será un buen plan hacerse con la versión oaxaqueña sin refinar del Tequila tradicional llamado mezcal, y decir que en este lugar hay grandes secretos pero es mejor dejarte llevar porque aquí las olas no se buscan, se encuentran por casualidad.

Es obligatorio recordar aquel Junio de 2006 cuando la organización del “Rip Curl Pro Search” celebró un evento que tuvo un éxito tremendo y que fue muy seguido a nivel mundial, por todos los medios y surfers, esta barra de derecha había sobrepasado con creces las expectativas. Si bien hay que ser objetivo y decir que justo en esas fechas se tuvo la suerte de que se juntaran una serie de circunstancias necesarias para que durante unos días fuera la derecha perfecta. Durante la competición Mick Fanning la comparaba con Kirra en sus mejores años, Kelly Slater dijo, “el circuito necesitaba algo como esto” y la leyenda Andy Irons, ganador final dijo “El mejor evento en años”, dicho esto, sobran las palabras.
