It’s a fantastic spot which was one of the first to become famous in the world of kitesurfing. From October through to March is the best time to sail there. The wind usually arrives in the morning with around 20 knots and gradually increases to around 30-35 knots. The water is quite cold so at least a 4/3 wetsuit is recommended, although the air temperature is summery. The wind is side shore and somewhat gusty but it can get waves of up to 4 metres.

El viento suele empezar por la mañana con unos 20 nudos y suele ir subiendo gradualmente hasta los 30 – 35 nudos. El agua es bastante fría y se recomienda un traje integral de 4/3, aunque fuera la temperatura es veraniega. El viento es sideshore algo racheado y puede haber olas de hasta 4 metros.
Big Bay can be found in Bloubergstrand, in Cape Town. It has a white sandy beach with two rocky points that create a small bay. The water is often cold due to the Benguela current that flows along the west coast of Africa. The wind components are usually NW and SSE. The waves aren’t as big as at the other nearby spots as the bay is protected by Robben Island, which you can see clearly from the shore along with the spectacular Table Mountain. Big Bay has many facilities like parking lots, grassy areas where you can build your material or chill out, lifeguards, bars, cafes and restaurants. Bloubergstrand is 30 km from Cape Town International Airport along Settlers Way/N2 y R27.
Big Bay se encuentra en la localidad de Bloubergstrand, en Cape Town. Posee una playa de arena blanca con dos puntas rocosas que se adentran en el mar formando una pequeña bahía. El agua suele estar fría debido a la corriente de Benguela que fluye a lo largo de la costa occidental de África. El viento suele soplar de componente NW y SSE. Las olas no son tan prominentes como en otros spots cercanos, ya que esta zona de la costa se encuentra protegida por Robben Island, la cual puede observarse con claridad desde la orilla, al igual que la espectacular Table Mountain. La playa de Big Bay brinda facilidades como parking, zonas de césped para montar el material o estar de chilling, socorristas, bares, cafeterías y restaurantes cercanos. Bloubergstrand esta a 30 km desde ‘Cape Town International Airport’ por Settlers Way/N2 y R27.
Cape Town is host to many incredible beaches, mountains, forests, vineyards and deserts, all within an hour of the city. It started to take preference in the nineties with European windsurfers searching for a greater variety of spots, from fresh water lakes to world class reefbreaks. Other nearby kitesurf spots are Kitebeach, Little Bay, Haakgat, Milnerton Beach and Dolphin Beach. From Big Bay you can see Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for nearly 30 years, and the spectacular Table Mountain which is beautiful, especially at sunrise and sunset. Most postcards pictures of Table Mountain are taken from here. If you want a break from the water, a visit to one of the world’s seven natural wonders, Table Mountain is recommended. You can go up the mountain by cable car and from there you’ll experience the immense views of the horizon and Cape Town. It’s common to see ‘jiving’, which is a traditional method of extracting mussels, on the Bloubergstrand beaches. The wine tasting tours are also famous in this area.

Puntos de interés para el Kitesurf que hay cerca son Kitebeach, Little Bay, Haakgat, la playa de Milnerton y Dolphin Beach. Desde la playa de Big Bay puedes observar Robben Island, donde estuvo prisionero Nelson Mandela casi 30 años. También hay unas vistas magnificas de Table Mountain, tanto del amanecer como el atardecer, la mayoría de fotos de postal se han realizado aquí. Por otro lado, puedes visitar Table Mountain directamente, ya que es una de las siete maravillas naturales del mundo. Allí gozarás de la inmensidad del horizonte y las vistas de Cape Town, pudiendo subir a lo más alto en teleférico. En las playas de Bloubergstrand es característico hacer ‘jiving’, que es el nombre que recibe el proceso de extracción de mejillones en esta localidad. También son famosas las Rutas del Vino.
