The best time to visit is from February to May. Any swell can be good at any of the many peaks around Cape Byron but the southeasterly generates the best waves; if large enough, all of the breaks north of the cape will be working. In this area, S swells are the best for all of the breaks north of Cape Byron whereas SE is best for the rights at Wategos, The Pass, Bullies and SW for The Wreck and Belongil Beach. South of the cape, the breaks favour W or NW wind. They don’t need much size to work as they are more exposed to the predominant swells. With more than 6 feet, Tallows is a difficult beach break close to the shore. If the ocean is strong, be careful of the currents at Cosy Corner. Broken Head works best with swell from the E and SW wind.

Cualquier swell puede ser bueno en cualquiera de los muchos picos alrededor de Cape Byron, siendo el Sureste el que mejores olas genera si trae suficiente tamaño para que funcionen todos los picos al norte del cabo. En esta zona los sures son los mejores para todos los picos al norte de Cape Byron. Mejor el SE para las derechas de Wategos, The Pass, Bullies y el SW para la zona de Wreck y Belongil Beach. Al sur del cabo los picos se ven favorecidos con viento W, NW. No necesitan mucho tamaño para funcionar ya que son lugares muy expuestos a los golpes de mar predominantes. Tallows con más de 6 pies es un beachbreak duro cerca de la orilla, Cosy Corner si hay fuerza en el mar se recomienda tener cuidado con las corrientes y Broken Head funciona con swell más del E y viento SW.

Byron Bay is located at the most eastern point of Australia, in a beautiful place south of the Gold Coast and northern border of the New South Wales coast. Since the sixties it’s been a place where the lifestyle is mostly linked to surfing. From Byron to Lennox Heads surfing was revolutionised immensely with the introduction of shorter boards by legendary surfers like Nat Young and George Greenough, whose designs taught the world new ways to surf that changed the sport’s history. A perfect destination surrounded by nature, beautiful beaches and a great atmosphere. It’s a place that celebrates important festivals and events like the Byron Bay Bluesfest which, after the summer, unites music bands for a week, or the Byron Bay Surf Festival which is an annual event for arts, music and other activities all linked to the surfing lifestyle. It’s one of the most popular tourist destinations in Australia and has the best deals on hostel accommodation in the country. This is true not only because of the beauty of the place but also because of the incredible surfing potential it possesses, it has everything, beach breaks, point breaks, barrels etc. Byron fits any level of surfing because of the many different peaks that can be found. Its peaks can be divided between those that are north and those that are south of Cape Byron.

In the north, the waves closest to the cape are the right-handers Little Wategos and below it, Wategos. They can be reached from Lighthouse Road taking the left into Brooke Drive. This area is fitted with electric barbeques and picnic tables, it’s a very quiet place, ideal for walking around the lighthouse or fishing around the rocks. There are also other good peaks, such as Bullies which is just south of Wategos. Two minutes drive east of the main Byron Bay beach is the most protected area of the bay, Clarkes Beach, where learners can surf unstressed and enjoy the clear water. The classic and most popular wave in Byron, ‘The Pass’, enters there. It’s a very nice long right which with low tide produces excellent barrels. Towards the north, passing the main beach and almost in front of the Byron Bay Surf Club you’ll find Shipwrecks or ‘The Wreck’ as it’s commonly known. It’s a break that occurs due to the sandbank that has accumulated around a boat that sank in 1921 in front of the main beach. This wave generates consistent and powerful rights and lefts so it’s good for those who want a little more intensity. A little further north, another option is the peak at Belongil Beach.

As for the peaks south of Cape Byron, the first, Cosy Corner, is protected from the north wind by the cape and can be accessed from the pay parking lot at the entrance to Arakwal National Park. Going further south, Tallows Beach is the next break and is the most consistent in Byron Bay so it’s the best option in the summer. Its sandbanks always produce quality waves. Further towards the south you’ll come across the small town of Suffolk Park and Broken Head beach, a spot south of Byron with picnic areas and showers. The parking area is small and fills in the summer but it’s a beautiful place where the sandbanks, if in good condition, also create good waves. It’s also one of the best places to stroll around in the natural surroundings. Many people choose to stay in this area for a few days whilst discovering Byron.

Allí encontrarás de todo, olas de playa, pointbreaks, barrels…Byron se adapta a cualquier nivel de surf por la gran variedad de picos que puedes encontrar entre los que se encuentran al Norte, y al Sur de Cape Byron.

Al Norte los spots más cercanos al cabo son las derechas de Little Wategos y más abajo Wategos, se accede a ellas desde Lighthouse Road girando a la izquierda en Brooke Drive. Es una zona acondicionada con barbacoas electricas y mesas de picnic, un lugar muy tranquilo ideal para pasear alrededor del faro o pescar entre alguno de los salientes rocosos, también se esconden buenos picos como Bullies más abajo de Wategos. A dos minutos en coche hacia la derecha de la playa principal de Byron Bay, está la zona más protegida de la bahía donde se puede aprender y disfrutar tranquilamente del Océano en las transparentes aguas de Clarkes Beach. Desde allí se entra la clasica ‘The Pass’, quizás la ola más popular en Byron, una larga derecha que con marea baja ofrece buenisimos tubos. Hacia el Norte pasando por la playa principal y casi enfrente del Surf Club de Byron Bay se encuentra Shipwrecks o Wreck, un pico que aparece aquí por el banco de arena que hay acumulado en torno a un barco hundido en 1921 frente a la playa principal, esta ola es una cuña que genera derechas e izquierdas consistentes y potentes muy buenas para aquellos que buscan un poco más de intensidad, otra posible opción un poco más al norte son los picos de Belongil beach.

​En cuanto a los picos al sur de Cape Byron, el primero Cosy Corner protegido del viento norte, se accede a través del parking de pago que da acceso al Arakwal National Park. Tallows Beach es el siguiente spot y el más expuesto de Byron Bay, suele ser la mejor opción en verano dando sus bancos siempre olas de calidad. Más hacia el sur se encuentra la pequeña ciudad de Suffolk Park y la playa de Broken Head, un spot familiar más apartado con áreas de picnic y duchas, el parking es pequeño con lo cual en verano se llena, es un bonito lugar en el que si los fondos están bien salen muy buenas olas, además es uno de los mejores sitios para pasear rodeado de sus espacios naturales. Esta zona es escogida por muchos para quedarse unos días descubriendo Byron Bay.
