The main peak on the outside is a right which breaks from a well formed sandbank behind the pier until the inside. With good wind conditions and a good size, it offers quite good quality barrels, even with small waves. With a rising mid tide the wedges dominate with powerful bowls on the inside. Pay attention to the peak which is called the Wedge as it has an incredible bowl. The consistency at the Durban beaches is down to their good location in relation to the potential to receive a greater variety of swells, along with the deep waters very near to the coast.

Durban receives the best conditions in the winter, from May to October and in the cyclone season from January to April, although the consistency is good all year round. New Pier works from 2 to 8 feet, but it can be more, above all with a big swell from a cyclone generated between Mozambique and Madagascar. In this case, the swell comes from the E and there will only be a few in the water as it can bring waves that are larger than 10 feet. The S and SE swells that come from the low pressures formed in the south of South Africa are more common. A NE swell is also possible but it’s generated by the wind and isn’t good quality. In any case the best wind is from the W, and if it’s small it’s good for all levels.

El pico principal en el Outside es una derecha que rompe desde un bien formado banco de arena detrás del muelle hasta el inside. Con buenas condiciones de tamaño y viento en marea baja ofrece tubos de bastante calidad incluso con olas pequeñas. En marea media subiendo empiezan a predominar las cuñas con potentes bowls en el inside. Prestar atención al pico llamado the wedge, posee un bowl increíble. La consistencia de las playas de Durban se debe a la buena ubicación respecto a las posibilidades para recibir una mayor variedad de tipos de swell, también ayuda que muy cerca de la costa hay aguas profundas.

Las mejores condiciones en Durban se dan en invierno, desde mayo a octubre, y en temporada de ciclones, de enero a abril, aunque en Durban la consistencia sea buena durante todo el año. New Pier funciona desde 2 a 8 pies, aunque puede alcanzar más, sobre todo en algún big swell que proceda de algún ciclón generado entre Mozambique y Madagascar, en este caso el swell viene del E, en algún momento puede traer olas que superan los 10 pies y en entonces solo unos pocos van al agua. El swell de S y SE procedente de bajas presiones formadas al sur de Sudáfrica es el más frecuente. El swell de NE también es posible pero es mar de viento y de peor calidad. En cualquier caso los mejores vientos son del Oeste y si está pequeño es buena para todos los niveles.

You’ll find the New Pier peaks on Durban’s main beach. It’s the surf capital and the third largest city in South Africa. It’s a very accessible and coveted destination and Durban’s international airport, New King Shaka, is just half an hour away. Since the eighties, the explosion of sports and the surf industry in Durban has led to a world of business opportunities related to surfing such as accommodation, schools, shops and an abundance of good boards thanks to the local shapers like Spyder Murphy, Peter Lawson and Clayton Nienaber. You can park along the whole stretch of the Golden Mile that borders Durban beach but bear in mind that the car parks fill very quickly. There are however, other parking zones with security guards.

The quality and above all, the consistency is high throughout the whole year. With certain conditions, the banks on Durban Beach are world class, there is also a big sense of tradition and these reasons make the level of surfing one of the best in the world. If we consider this and the fact that it’s easy to enter the water thanks to the piers which end next to the peak, the result is that when the conditions are good, the atmosphere in the narrow take off zones is very competitive. It’s no surprise that Durban has given the world some great surfers like Jordy Smith, an aspiring candidate for the world title and other legends that were recently in the WCT like Travis Logie, David Weare, Royden Bryson, Ricky Basnett, Paul Canning, the legendary Shaun Tomson and Martin Potter, who has British nationality but grew up in Durban, and the respectable big charger Grant ‘Twiggy’ Baker.

With this panorama, it’s advisable to avoid surfing during lunchtime hours and at the weekends, however you could check the 8 kilometres between Ushaka and Blue Lagoon as there will surely be a quieter spot around there. For example, from New Pier towards the south you’ll find Addington which is appropriate for those who are progressing. Wedge and Balmoral are next to New Pier, the highly recommended Bay of Plenty and North Beach are further north and lastly, the zone near to Blue Lagoon Snake Park or Battery among others. Durban has dry winters with warm water so a 2 mm is sufficient. It’s humid in the summer and the water temperature is more than 24°C. It’s well-known that the waters around South Africa have sharks but the chances of an attack are very small and there have been nets in place since the sixties.

New Pier se encuentra en la playa principal de Durban, la capital del surf y la tercera ciudad más grande de Sudáfrica. Es un destino asequible y el spot más codiciado de la ciudad, a solo media hora desde New King Shaka, el Aeropuerto internacional de Durban. La explosión del deporte y la industria del surf ha hecho que en Durban, desde los años ochenta, se haya creado un mundo de posibilidades en torno al surfing. Podrás aparcar en todo el tramo de La Golden Mile que bordea la playa de Durban y tener en cuenta que los parkings se completan pronto, siendo conveniente aparcar en zonas vigiladas.

La calidad y sobre todo la consistencia son altas durante todo el año. Es frecuente que los bancos de la playa de Durban con determinadas condiciones alcancen clase mundial, la tradición también es muy grande. Todas estas razones hacen que el nivel de surfing por metro cuadrado sea uno de los mejores del mundo, si a ello sumamos que la entrada al agua es fácil gracias a los muelles que terminan al lado del pico. El resultado es que el ambiente en las estrechas zonas de take off cuando hay buenas condiciones sea muy competitivo. No es de extrañar que Durban haya dado al mundo surfers de la talla de Jordy Smith, aspirante al título mundial u otros míticos que hasta hace poco tiempo estaban en el WCT como Travis Logie, David Weare, Royden Bryson o Ricky Basnett, Paul Canning, los legendarios Shaun Tomson y Martin Potter británico de nacimiento pero criado en los picos de Durban y el respetado big charger Grant ‘Twiggy’ Baker.

Es recomendable surfear en horas alternativas a las horas de descanso y evitar los fines de semana, o chequear los 8 kilómetros que hay desde Ushaka hasta Blue Lagoon ya que seguramente hay algún rincón más tranquilo para surfear. Desde New Pier hacia el sur está la zona de Addington más apropiada para los que progresan, justo al lado de New Pier está Wedge y Balmoral, hacia el norte los recomendables picos de Bay of plenty, North Beach, y cerca de Blue Lagoon, Snake Park o Battery entre otros. El clima de Durban posee inviernos secos con el agua templada, será suficiente un 2 mm. Los veranos son húmedos y el agua supera los 24º. Hay que decir que es conocida Sudáfrica por ser un área de tiburones, pero esto no es algo que nos deba preocupar porque la probabilidad de tener algún percance es mínima.
