The best time to sail is from November to May, when the side-onshore wind is dominant. It’s mainly NNE and NE between 13 and 18 knots. In the summer, the component is SE and weaker. Due to the hazards of boats, divers and swimmers etc., it’s a spot for experienced riders. With a big swell, the waves break on the shore, making it difficult for beginners and intermediates, but there are many easier alternatives around like Punta Esmeralda.
La mejor época para navegar es de noviembre a mayo, en la que predominan vientos side onshore mayormente NNE y NE de unos 13 a 18 nudos de media. En verano, el viento suele ser del SE y no sopla algo más flojo. Es más bien un lugar para expertos, debido a la afluencia de barcos, buceadores y demás ocupantes de la playa. Cuando el swell es grande puede haber olas orilleras que dificultan la práctica a principiantes e intermedios, pero hay muchos lugares alternativos como Punta Esmeralda, donde las condiciones son más asequibles.
Playa del Carmen is a city in Solidaridad, located in the north of the Yucatán peninsula, an hour from Cancún. The coast enjoys Caribbean waters and forms part of the Riviera Maya. It’s a tourist destination and receives constant winds. In fact, it has been host to international competitions like the PKRA.
It’s prohibited to sail in the centre of Playa del Carmen, but kitesurfing is authorised at Playacar and Coco Beach. Both are white sand beaches with a backdrop of rainforests. Access for kiters is limited and it’s mainly a place for experienced riders due to the affluence of bats, jet skis, divers and bathers. The best time to sail there is from November to May when the side-onshore winds are dominant. The component is mainly NNE and NE, usually between 13 and 18 knots. The wind component in the summer is usually weaker and from the SE. To get there, the easiest way is to get a bus from the Cancun Airport to the centre of Cancún and another bus or taxi from there. If you go by car from Cancún, it just takes an hour on the Carretera Cancún – Tulum/Mexico 307 towards the south.
Playa del Carmen es una ciudad del municipio de Solidaridad, localizado al norte de la península de Yucatán, a una hora de Cancún. La costa en la Playa del Carmen esta bañada por aguas del Caribe y forma parte de la Riviera Maya, por tanto, es un lugar eminentemente turístico y donde puede gozarse de condiciones de viento constante. De hecho, ha sido la sede de torneos internacionales como la PKRA.
Está prohibido navegar en el centro de Playa del Carmen, pero si está autorizada la práctica del kiteboarding en Playacar y Coco beach. Ambas playas son de arena blanca con selva tropical de fondo. El acceso para kiters es limitado y es más bien un lugar para expertos, debido a la afluencia de barcos, jetskies, buceadores y demás ocupantes de la playa. En verano, el viento suele ser del SE y sopla algo más suave. Para llegar desde ‘Cancun Airport’ lo más sencillo es tomar un autobús al centro de Cancún, y de ahí un taxi o transporte público. Para ir desde Cancún en coche sólo hay que tomar la Carretera Cancún – Tulum/Mexico 307 hacia el sur y llegarás en una hora.

In the Coban Mayan Village you can see an authentic Mayan pyramid surrounded by the ruins of an ancient city in the middle of the rainforest. The archaeological site is impressive, you can climb the 121 steps, which according to beliefs were the amount of years that the Mayans lived for, and once up there, you can see the grandeur and vast expanse of the rainforest. The famous Quinta is a place you shouldn’t miss either, it’s full of restaurants, bars and cafes together with craft shops with Mexican silver and a bohemian atmosphere. In Playa del Carmen, the beautiful beaches with crystal clear waters offer diving as an interesting alternative activity. Al Norte de la Playa del Carmen hay un gran parque natural que no puedes perderte, larguísimas tirolinas sobre el lago, buceo en cuevas con estalactitas, un mirador hacia el enorme bosque, rutas guiadas en 4×4 y vehículos anfibios es la experiencia que encontrarás en el parque Explor. En Coban Mayan Village podrás conocer una auténtica pirámide milenaria Maya, el entorno es una ciudad en ruinas en medio del bosque. El conjunto arqueológico impresiona, podrás subir 121 escalones que según creencias eran los años que vivían los mayas. Una vez arriba, podrás divisar la grandeza y basta extensión del bosque. La famosa Quinta es un lugar que no te puedes perder tampoco, está llena de restaurantes, bares y cafeterías unidas con tiendas artesanales con plata mexicana y un ambiente muy bohemio. En Playa del Carmen, las paradisiacas playas con aguas cristalinas brindan un plan alternativo como son los tours de buceo, con Betina Tours tendréis asegurado un nado con tortugas marinas en el arrecife de coral de Akumal.
