The best time of year for surfing is from December to March when the swells with long periods come from the north. However, various swells enter from the South Atlantic all year round. It’s important to bear in mind that the rainy season is from March to July, and due to the intensity of the rivers, the waters can be murkier but the benefit is that there will be fewer people. The water temperature is around 28 °C throughout the year and the atmospheric temperature ranges between 24 °C and 31 °C in the summer and 21 °C and 28 °C in the winter.

With regards to the most well-known peaks, the beachbreaks are highlighted; Boca da Lagoa Guarairas is 800 metres of sand with good sandy bottoms. On the right of the same beach, there is one with a rocky bottom that works well with SE swell. To the left of the beach, there are other peaks which are ideal for beginners. Praia da Cacibinhas is a 4 kilometre beachbreak that works with an E and SE swell. Praia do Madeiro together with Ponta do Madeiro, is a world class spot with a long right over a reef which normally works from November to March with North swell, low tide and offshore S or E wind. Praia do Curral is located in Baia dos Golfinhos and works with any swell as it is often protected from nearly all of the prevailing winds. Another popular beach is Praia do Amor, a beachbreak which works with SE swell, is better with a mid rising tide from 2 to 6 feet, and holds with any wind.

The following peaks break over a rocky bottom: the highlight is Lajao, in the centre of Pipa, a reefbreak 300 metres offshore with a right which breaks with mid to high tide and N and SE swells. There is also the legendary Abacateiro, to the right of Lajao, a spot for more advanced surfers as it is tubular and fast and breaks shallowly. It works with mid to high tide. Sororoca Reef is a perfect A-frame with a fast take off and manoeuvrable walls. With the perfect conditions it offers quality barrels. It also works with mid to high tide. Another important peak is Lajinha, world-class and possibly Pipa’s best. It’s a shallow reefbreak with fast barrelling waves which works with E and SE swell.

La mejor temporada de olas va desde diciembre a marzo cuando llegan los swells de largo periodo provenientes del norte. No obstante igualmente a lo largo de todo el año se alternan distintos swells desde el Atlántico Sur. Es importante tener en cuenta es que la temporada de lluvias dura entre marzo y julio, debido a la intensidad los ríos harán que las aguas estén más turbias pero también que hay menor número de afluencia. La temperatura del agua durante todo el año ronda los 28°C, la temperatura ambiente se mantiene en verano entre 24ºC y 31ºC y en invierno, entre 21ºC y 28ºC.

En cuanto a los picos mas reconocidos destacamos los beachbreaks, de ellos Boca da Lagoa Guarairas, una arenal de 800 metros de buenos fondos de arena y la derecha de Boca da Lagoa, con fondo de piedras que funciona con swell de SE. Otros picos se encuentran a la izquierda de la playa ideales para principiantes. Praia da Cacibinhas, un beachbreak de 4 kilómetros funciona com swell de E o SE. Praia do Madeiro junto Ponta do Madeiro, un spot de clase mundial, consta de una larga derecha sobre arrecife que normalmente funciona desde noviembre a marzo com swell de norte, marea baja y viento offshore S o E. Praia Do Curral se sitúa en Baia dos Golfinhos, funciona con cualquier swell y suele estar protegida de casi todos los viento más predominantes. Otro de las playas más frecuentados es Praia do Amor, un beach breack, que funciona con swell de sudeste y mejor con marea media subiendo, de 2 a 6 pies y aguanta cualquier viento.

Los siguientes picos rompen sobre fondo de roca, destacan Lajao, en el centro de Pipa, un arrecife ubicado 300 metros mar adentro donde rompe una derecha, funciona con marea media-alta con swell de norte y sudeste. Otro es el mítico point de Abacateiro, situado a la derecha de Lajão, es un spot reservado a los más experimentados, rompe con poca profundidad, es tubular, rápida y funciona con marea media-alta. Sororoca Reef, se trata de un perfecto A-frame de take off rápido y paredes maniobrables que con buenas condiciones ofrece tubos de calidad, funciona con marea media-alta. Otro importante pico es Lajinha, otra ola clase mundial, y posiblemente la mejor de Pipa, se trata de un reef-break de olas rápidas y tubulares sobre poca agua que funciona com swell de E y SE.

Pipa is located in the northeast of Brazil, six kilometres south of the small fishing town Tibau do Sul, and around 80 kilometres south of the Rio Grande State capital, Natal. Pipa has gone from being a small fishing village in the eighties to a cosmopolitan and multicultural place with different ethnic groups, cultures and accents from all over the world. The quality and variety of the waves make the area a surfing reference in Brazil. To get there you can fly to Natal Augusto Severo International Airport and rent a car or get a bus connection to Pipa from Rodoviária Nova in Natal.

Praia da Pipa is a beautiful beach with numerous services, accommodation, restaurants and clubs, etc. The most beautiful beach in the area is Praia do Madeiro but you’ll also find Baia dos Golfinhos and Praia do Curral, where it’s common to surf amongst dolphins. One of Pipa’s most exclusive characteristics is its geographical position, in the most eastern point of South America. This brings optimal conditions throughout the whole year on one of the four main beaches as they can receive both north and south swells. The best peaks are between Tibau do Sul and Praia da Pipa.

Surfing reached Pipa in the seventies, when it was a small village and the locals still lived in mud huts, surrounded by nature and deserted beaches, away from the big cities. It was the end of the sixties when the Simonete family and the pioneers Caio Pereira and Lucrecio de Araújo began to get to know the peaks, and little by little, Pipa became more popular. At the beginning of the eighties you had to walk there from Tibau do Sul but it was worth it for those unforgettable moments of peace and quiet at the Sororoca, Abacateiro and Lajão peaks. At the end of the eighties, the popular Luruca and Felipe Dantas, the 1989 Brazilian vice champion, started going to Pipa and it became the most important spot in Northeast Brazil.

Pipa se encuentra a seis kilometros al sur de la pequeña ciudad pesquera de Tibau do Sul y a unos 80 kilómetros al sur de Natal, capital del estado de Río Grande do Norte en el noreste de Brasil. Este lugar ha pasado de ser una sencilla villa de pescadores en los años ochenta a ser un lugar cosmopolita y multicultural donde confluyen distintas etnias, culturas y acentos de todas partes del mundo. La calidad y variedad de sus olas hace que además esta zona sea hoy día un referente en Brasil para el surf y el bodyboard. Para llegar hay que volar hacia el Aeropuerto Internacional de Natal Augusto Severo, el principal del estado y donde puedes alquilar un coche o tomar alguno de los autobuses que van hacia Pipa desde la Rodoviária Nova en Natal.

Praia da Pipa es una playa de gran belleza que cuenta con numerosos servicios, alojamiento, restaurantes, clubs, etc. Su nombre se debe a su ligera forma de corazón. La más bonita es Praia do Madeiro, pero también encontramos Baia dos Golfinhos y Praia do Curral, donde es frecuente surfear entre delfines. Una de las características más exclusivas de Pipa es su posicion geográfica en la punta más al este de América del Sur, este emplazamiento geográfico permite encontrar condiciones óptimas durante todo el año en alguna de sus cuatro playas principales porque gracias a esa localización puede recibir tanto swells del norte, como del sur, encontrandose los mejores picos entre Tibau do Sul y Praia da Pipa.

El surf llegó aquí en los años setenta, cuando Pipa era aún una pequeña aldea de pescadores que vivían en casas sencillas hechas con barro y alejadas de las grandes ciudades; un lugar rodeado de naturaleza virgen y playas totalmente desérticas. Fue a través de la familia Simonete y los pioneros Caio Pereira y Lucrecio de Araújo como a finales de los años sesenta cuando empezaron a conocerse sus picos, poco a poco Pipa fue haciendose más popular por todo Brasil. A principios de los años ochenta había que venir caminando desde Tibau do Sul y encontrar un hueco en alguna familia local. Eran momentos inolvidables de tranquilidad en los buenos picos de Sororoca, Abacateiro y Lajão. A finales de los ochenta los populares Luruca y Felipe Dantas, el subcampeón brasilero en 1989 empezaron a frecuentar Pipa y este lugar se consagró como el spot más importante al Nordeste de Brasil.
