Restaurants is a perfect left-hander facing the South Pacific, its delicacy means that it only works if the conditions are optimal as the shallow reef is very sensitive to any variation of wind or swell. The best tide is medium to high as this is when the sets are best placed on the reef and the wave reaches its maximum length. Its best height is from 4 to 8 feet, glassy or with light breezes from the east or southeast. It is always half the size of Cloudbreak, which will also serve as a reference along with your surfing ability. It can be accessed easily by paddling from the beach, whereas from the other islands you have to go by boat. Logically, if there are good conditions it will be crowded, but in this legendary place there is maximum respect for everyone who surfs there.

Restaurants es una izquierda perfecta enfrentada al Pacífico Sur, es una ola caprichosa que solo funciona si las condiciones son óptimas, su arrecife poco profundo es muy sensible a cualquier variación de viento o del swell. El mejor momento de marea es de media a alta, que es cuando las series se colocan mejor sobre el arrecife y la ola consigue su máxima longitud.

Rompe con Swell de S o SW, su mejor tamaño es de 4 a 8 pies, glassy o con ligeras brisas del E – SE. Siempre tiene la mitad de tamaño que Cloudbreak, lo cual también te servirá de referencia según la capacidad de tu surfing. Se puede acceder fácilmente remando desde la playa, desde el resto de islas tienen que traerte en bote. Si hay buenas condiciones lógicamente habrá mucha afluencia, por ello el respeto para todos los que allí surfean debe ser máximo.

Restaurants breaks north of the atoll of Tavarua which is located 26 kilometres west of Viti Levu, the biggest island of the Fijian archipelago. It’s one of the top ten lefts in the world and is located very close to its older sister Cloudbreak, from which it differs by being longer and more mechanical. Speaking to the reporters at the Volcom Pro Fiji 2012, Mick Fanning said “I love the power, unpredictability and challenge that Cloudbreak poses. Restaurants is more perfect and breaks with less water but in any case both are world-class waves and so I hope both waves work”.

Nadi airport is in Viti levu and this is the hub from where you’ll start your trip. There are a variety of options regarding accomodation, from luxurious resorts to nice surf camps. A recommended option and one which is becoming more and more popular is to stay in one of the hostels or in one of the typical wood and straw huts called bures that you’ll find around Nadi. It is recommended to take everything with you, your quiver, leash, and wax etc. because it’ll be difficult to find places where you can buy things.

Only a few years ago, Tavarua was a private island that only a few priviliged could get to and surf but fortunately since the 2nd July 2010, when the Fijian government passed a law which meant that the reefs there or in any place in Fiji would be free from exclusivity and private use. This has been very positive because it means that a great number of locals can take advantage of the benefits of its resources and Restaurants and Cloudbreak are within reach of more surfers.

Restaurants rompe al norte del atolón de Tavarua, a 26 kilómetros al oeste de Viti Levu, la mayor isla del Archipiélago de Fiji. Es sin duda una de las izquierdas del “top ten” mundial y se encuentra muy cercana a su hermana mayor Cloudbreak de la cual se diferencia por ser más larga y mecánica. En unas declaraciones a la prensa durante el ‘Volcom Pro Fiji’ de 2013 decía Mick Fanning, “Me encanta el poder, lo imprevisible y el desafío que supone Cloudbreak, Restaurants es más larga, perfecta y rompe con menos agua, en cualquier caso ambas son olas de clase mundial, así que solo espero funcionen las dos” palabras que resumen bien cuál es la diferencia.

En Viti Levu está el aeropuerto de Nadi, centro de operaciones desde el que empezarás tu viaje. Las opciones de alojamiento actualmente son muy variadas, desde los lujosos Resorts y bonitos Surfcamps de siempre, o la opción muy recomendable y cada vez más popular de alojarte en algún hostal o los típicos bures que se encuentran alrededor de Nadi. Es recomendable que en Fiji traigas todo tu quiver, leash, parafina, ect., porque será difícil que encuentres sitios donde reponer existencias.

Decir que hace poco tiempo Tavarua fue una isla privada en la que pocos privilegiados podían surfear, afortunadamente desde el dos de Julio de 2010, el Gobierno de Fiji aprobó una ley por la cual los arrecifes que allí o en cualquier lugar de Fiji existen sean espacios libres de apropiaciones y usos privados, esto ha sido muy positivo porque ha posibilitado que un mayor número de población local pueda aprovecharse del beneficio de sus recursos y aumente la oferta para que Restaurants y Cloudbreak estén al alcance de surfers con una capacidad adquisitiva menos exigente.
