Its consistency is extraordinary and the sandy bottoms normally work well with any tide. The best size is normally between 1 and 5 feet, as any bigger and it phases out. It also gets smaller the further west you go. The orientation is NW so it works better with S and SE wind. The banks are changeable on this beach due to its size and exposure so the peaks are variable, but you’ll see that some have really long and manoeuvrable waves.

Salinas Beach can be divided into various parts, starting with La Peñona in the west and La Pirámide, peaks that work with a rising low tide. This zone has the most protection from the big swells but you can occasionally surf it at full tide. You’ll also find El Balneario which works with a mid rising tide. El Polvorin is in the centre of the beach in front of the lifeguard hut, La Luna is in front of the Gauzon buildings °3 and °4 and La Rampa is in front of the Gauzon building °1. This is the zone which usually has better quality waves and is therefore popular with the Salinas locals.

The solitary peaks Las Dunas and Las Chimeneas are towards the east of the beach. It’s a quieter zone with good quality waves. These peaks are good with W swell and S wind. San Juan is at the far east of the beach, by the seawall at the entrance of the Avilés estuary. This beach has nice long waves that are ideal for longboarders, is mostly exposed to NW and you can surf the parts with little swell. The common NE wind in the summer makes the water messy along the whole beach, except for San Juan, where the seawall and its orientation protects it from the wind and gives good off shore conditions. Lastly, as with any North Atlantic spot, the water is cold so a 4 mm wetsuit is required until spring at least, when you can use a 3 mm, and a 2 mm or shorty in the summer months.

Su consistencia es extraordinaria y sus fondos de arena suelen funcionar bien en cualquier tipo de marea, el mejor tamaño suele estar entre 1 y 5 pies, con más tamaño se desfasa, habiendo menos tamaño cuanto más al oeste de la playa. Al tener orientación NW funciona mejor con viento de sur y sureste. Los bancos son cambiantes en una playa tan expuesta y extensa, por ello también los picos muy variables, pero algunos los verás realmente entretenidos, largos y maniobrables.

La Playa de Salinas se divide en varias partes, empezando por la zona oeste, allí se sitúa La Peñona y los picos de La Pirámide que funcionan en marea baja subiendo, esta zona es la que está más protegida de los grandes swells, que en ocasiones aquí se pueden surfear con mareas llenas. En esta zona se encuentra El Balneario que funciona con marea media subiendo. En el centro de la playa tenemos los picos del Polvorin, enfrente de la caseta de socorrismo y de La Luna situado enfrente del Gauzón 3 y 4, y La Rampa frente al Edificio Gauzón 1. Esta zona es la que suele dar más calidad de olas y por ello frecuentada por los locales de Salinas.

Al este de la playa tenemos los picos solitarios de las Dunas y las Chimeneas zona más tranquila y con buena calidad de olas. Estos picos son buenos con swell de W y viento S. Al fondo junto al dique de entrada de la Ría de Avilés encontramos San Juan. Esta playa nos dan buenas olas y largas para el surf de longboard. A diferencia de los demás picos este es el q esta más expuesto al NW y con partes de poco mar podemos sacar buenos baños. El viento NE muy usual en verano destroza el mar en toda la playa menos en San Juan, donde el dique y su orientación protege del viento dando buenos baños con offshore. Las condiciones en invierno, como en cualquier lugar bañado por el Atlántico Norte, son frías y es necesario un neopreno de 4 mm hasta bien avanzada la primavera cuando es posible cambiar al 3 mm incluso avanzado el verano 2 mm o traje corto.

Salinas is the capital of surf in Asturias and one of the pioneering and most important spots in Spain. The spot is commonly called Salinas Beach but its official name is El Espartal Beach and it’s divided into two parts; Salinas Beach on the left and San Juan de Nieva Beach on the right. Salinas is well known for its liveliness and the wide variety of options it has to offer including the variety of peaks, the consistency of its waves and the good transport links. In the summer it attracts a huge community of surfers that go there to enjoy the surf lifestyle and every year at the end of the summer, the famous Vans Salinas Longboard Festival is held there. An entertaining high level event that is well worth seeing.

There is currently a new initiative which aims to create a natural surf reserve. The declaration would not only give it a name and recognition, but also a valued appreciation of an exceptional resource. The Salinas Surf Reserve will include both areas and all of the main peaks at San Juan de Nieva, a place which is normally frequented by longboarders, Las Dunas, El Espartal, La Luna, La Caseta Azul and El Ewan, although there are many more that can be surfed along the three kilometre long coastline, each with a great variety of quality waves that are suitable for different levels and have space for everyone. If you go by road it can be accessed from the N-632, or you can go by rail or fly there as Asturias Airport has daily flights from Barcelona and Madrid. You can also find more peaks around the area, such as the beaches Xagó, Verdicio and Arnao.

Like so many areas in Asturias, Espartal Beach and its dune system has been a protected natural environment since 2006. Some think that the Salinas environment and its beach, Espartal, is perhaps too urbanised, however, despite the difficulties faced when developing and conserving the natural environment, they have managed to find a balance in which an incredible surf destination, where you can enjoy the waves and the permanent liveliness of the typical bars, cider houses and restaurants, has been created. Most of these bars etc. are just a few metres away from the beach along the promenade, for example the epic San Juan bar which is popular with the locals or, if you prefer you can enjoy the grassy chill out zones and viewpoints around the wooden walkways which were built to protect the dunes. Salinas has a special air about it along with good people that undoubtedly have respect for this mythical place and its extraordinary beauty.

Salinas es la capital del surf en la región de Asturias y uno de los spots pioneros y más importantes en España, aunque el spot es comúnmente conocido por Salinas. La playa se llama Playa del Espartal y es una extensa playa que se divide en dos: a la izquierda la Playa de Salinas y a la derecha la Playa de San Juan de Nieva. Salinas posee tanto reconocimiento por la gran variedad de opciones que te ofrece, animación, extensión, variedad de picos, buenas comunicaciones y por supuesto la consistencia de las olas, sobre todo durante los meses de verano cuando atrae una gran comunidad de surfers que hacen que este lugar sea el epicentro del surf. Todos los años a finales de verano se celebra el Vans Salinas Longboard Festival de Surf, un evento de gran nivel.

Actualmente existe una novedosa iniciativa por la que se pretende crear una reserva natural del surf. Esta declaración de Reserva de Surf otorgaría a Salinas no solo una denominación propia y un instrumento de reconocimiento único sino que también una patrimonialización y revalorización de un recurso natural excepcional. Dicha Reserva de Surf incluiría todos los picos principales de San Juan de Nieva (punto de encuentro frecuentado por longboarders, Las Dunas, el Espartal, La Luna, la Caseta Azul y el Ewan, aunque son muchos más los que se pueden surfear a lo largo de sus tres kilómetros de costa, todos ellos con olas de gran variedad y calidad aptas para distintos niveles donde siempre habrá un hueco para surfear. Se accede por carretera, por la N-632 y la variante de Avilés, por ferrocarril o a través del Aeropuerto de Asturias que dispone de vuelos diarios con Barcelona y Madrid. Cerca podemos encontrar más picos de surf como en Playa Xagó, Playa Verdicio y Playa Arnao.

Como tantos espacios en Asturias, La Playa de El Espartal y su sistema dunar, es un entorno natural protegido desde el año 2006, es posible que para algunos el entorno de Salinas sea un lugar demasiado urbanizado, sin embargo, en esa difícil fórmula para conjugar desarrollo y conservación natural se ha conseguido establecer un equilibrio en el cual se muestra un destino de surf increíble donde disfrutar de sus olas y de la permanente animación de sus bares típicos, restaurantes y sidrerías; la mayor parte de estos bares se encuentran a escasos metros de la playa a lo largo del paseo marítimo. Por ejemplo, destaca el mítico Bar San Juan, lugar de reunión de deportistas hablando de mar y olas. También puedes disfrutar de las pasarelas de madera, construidas para proteger las dunas y que cuentan con áreas de césped y zonas de descanso, lo cierto es que todo en Salinas tiene un aire especial que es el que le dan sus buenas gentes y el respeto incuestionable que ellas mismas tienen por este mítico lugar y por su extraordinaria belleza.
