St. Kilda is distinguished by its tourism and almost certain conditions. The wind isn’t as strong as in Perth but if you’re in Melbourne and there’s a sea breeze you shouldn’t miss out on a session. The wind usually blows between October and the beginning of March, and depending on your needs, you’ll find the perfect spot in the bay. In St. Kilda Harbour, the NNE wind tends to be between 5 and 15 knots, making it ideal for beginners. The water is flat and well sheltered.

In Fawker Beacon and Mordialloc the wind component is N and NW and usually between 5 and 10 knots. It’s a little choppy. For those in search of waves, you should head to the South Channel where there’s a more exposed zone with stronger wind, between 20 and 40 knots, NNE. In Point Wilson strong winds are predominant but it maintains flat water conditions due to its geographical position in the elbow of the bay. The wind component is NNE with between 15 and 30 knots. In Altona you’ll find a good zone for intermediate riders which is less sheltered from the waves. It needs ENE wind and usually has between 5 and 15 knots.

El spot de St Kilda es el más destacado en cuanto a público y condiciones casi aseguradas se refiere. El viento no es tan fuerte como en Perth pero si estás en Melbourne y sopla algo de Seabreeze, no te puedes perder una sesión. El viento suele soplar entre los meses de octubre hasta principios de marzo y según sean vuestras necesidades encontraréis el lugar ideal en la bahía. En St Kilda Harbour el viento viene en dirección NNE entre 5 y 15 nudos es ideal para los aprendices, el agua está plato y muy bien refugiada. En Fawker Beacon y Mordialloc encontraréis vientos de 5 y 10 nudos N y NW, con el agua algo más choppy.

Los que busquen olas deberán ir a la zona de South Channel Island, es la zona más abierta y tendrán los vientos más fuertes entre 20 y 40 nudos NNE. En Point Wilson predominan los vientos fuertes pero con el condicionante de tener el agua plato debido a sus particulares condiciones geográficas al ser un codo de la bahía. Los vientos soplan en dirección NNE entre 15 y 30 nudos. En Altona encontraréis una buena zona para riders intermedios, menos resguardada de las olas y con vientos de 5 a 15 nudos ENE.

St. Kilda is six kilometres from Melbourne and is well known for its bohemian culture. It’s Melbourne’s leisure centre and St. Kilda is the most famous beach in the city. Kite fever has led many locals and Melbourne residents to this world famous spot which is ideal for the sport with its constant winds and flat water. To reach the spot there are two options. The smallest access point is by the Catani Gardens which are next to Pier Road, to the left of the breakwater on a small fine sandy beach in St. Kilda Harbour. It has free parking and is easy access with equipment.

The other option is just below Beaconsfield Parade between the Go Kite School and the West Beach Bathers pavilion where there is a much larger and busier white sandy beach. The parking is at the end of the beach and is very accessible with the equipment. The area is protected by the port and there’s also a long breakwater that leads to the estuary, leaving perfect freestyle conditions. It’s one of the largest sailing areas with constant conditions in Australia. An authentic wall against the sea closing the bay almost completely, except for the entrance to Fort Nepean. This, united with the heat from Melbourne city and the good wind conditions, makes Port Phillip Bay a unique place to do wind sports.

St Kilda es un suburbio que se encuentra a seis kilómetros de Melbourne, es conocida por su cultura bohemia, hogar de numerosos artistas y músicos. Es como si fuera el centro lúdico de Melbourne y en él St Kilda Beach, la playa más famosa de la ciudad. La fiebre del Kite ha llevado a numerosos locales y a gran parte de los habitantes de Melbourne a este spot de fama mundial, ideal por tener un viento constante y agua plato. Para acceder al spot hay dos opciones; el acceso más pequeño se encuentra debajo de Catani Gardens, junto a Pier Road, a la izquierda del espigón en una pequeña playa, dentro del St Kilda Harbour, con aparcamiento gratuito en la zona y de muy fácil acceso para mover el material. La segunda opción está justo debajo de Beaconsfield Parade entre la escuela de Go Kite y el local de West Beach Bathers Pavilion, es una playa de arena blanca mucho más extensa y con más público, el aparcamiento se encuentra a pie de playa y es muy accesible para desplazar el material.

La zona está protegida por el puerto, y además tiene un largo espigón que supera la bocana ‘St Kilda Pier Breakwater’ dejando unas perfectas condiciones para el freestyler. La extensión par navegar sobre estas condiciones es de las más grandes de Australia, un auténtico muro contra el mar cerrando la bahía casi por completo, a excepción de la entrada por Fort Nepean, unido al calor de la ciudad de Melbourne hacen que la zona de Port Phillip Bay sea un lugar único para la práctica de deportes a vela, además de ser una de las más ventosas y constantes del año.
