The wind is usually very strong, often more than 22 knots, but only side to side onshore. It’s better to rig a bigger sail as it’s always weaker inside. The W wind is onshore and it’s normal to have head high waves along with strong currents between the breakwaters, which are unmarked out of season and difficult to see at high tide so be careful. The main wind direction is W. This spot usually receives wind all year round except in the summer, during July and August.

Westerland - Schleswig-Holstein

Located in the North Sea, Sylt is in the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park and is the largest of the Frisian Islands. The island is connected to the mainland by a causeway called the Hindenburgdamm which is only for trains, although you can also access this exclusive place by the ferry which links the Danish port Havneby, on Romo Island in the south of Denmark, with List port. You won’t need a vehicle on this island thanks to the extensive bus services.

Near to Westerland on the west coast you’ll find Brandenburger Beach, the place where big sports events like the Super Grand Slam PWA Sylt, the windsurf world cup which has embraced the wave, slalom and freestyle disciplines every September since 1984. It’s considered as the biggest windsurfing event in the world with more than 200.000 spectators attending the ten day competition.

Other events are the Rollei Bullet HD Summer Opening in May, the German championship the Deutschen Windsurf-Meisterschaften, which embraces three disciplines Racing (Formula Windsurfing, Slalom (IFCA) and Wave-Freestyle, at the end of July. The IKA Kitesurf World Cup has also been hosted there for more than ten years, bringing more than 100.000 spectators.

The beach has a 300 metre sandbank along the coastline, where the shallowness and the North Sea make waves of up to four metres with gusts of wind that vary between 22 and 38 knots with onshore to side-onshore winds. The W wind is onshore and makes big powerful waves and strong currents between the breakwaters which go around 20 metres into the sea with around two hundred metres in between each one. They aren’t marked out of season and you can only just see them at high tide so the best idea is to ask a local before going in.

Westerland is visited a lot by windsurf and kitesurf lovers. If you want some peace and quiet you can head north towards Kampen and Wenningstedt where you’ll have similar conditions. In the north of the island you’ll find List and Königshafen, spots which are less well known than Brandenburger and in the south, Rantum Ost and Sansibar beaches.

Westerland - Schleswig-Holstein

The island of Sylt has a coastal topography on most of the surface and is only connected to the continent by a narrow road. On the west coast, the undercurrent of the North Sea and strong winds are characteristical whereas on the east coast, the Wadden Sea is a lot calmer and silty, in fact, at low tide it exposes vast mudflats and it has been listed as a National World Heritage Site by UNESCO since 2009.

Most of the restaurants and shops can be found in Westerland, along with the Mensing Kunst-Center art gallery, the Sylter Welle leisure centre, the Einkaufsmeile Friedrichstraße shopping centre and the Sylt Aquarium. In List you can visit the GOSCH Lister Fischhaus to try their famous fresh fish and the Erlebniszentrum Naturgewalten ecological museum. In Keitum you’ll find the Altfriesisches Haus and the Sylter Heimatmuseum. With reagrds to natural parks, Sylt won’t leave you indifferent. Towards the south you’ll find Rantumbecken, Baakdeel-Rantum, Rantumer Dünen and Hörnum-Odde and towards the north Dünenlandschaft auf dem Roten Kliff, Nielönn-Sylt and Nord-Sylt.
