The best conditions for Telescopes are between five and six feet, holding sets of eight well. It needs southeast wind and west swell at mid tide. It starts breaking at three feet with an accessible take off and a barrel in the first section, and after it has good sections where it creates good curves. When it’s bigger, it starts to break much further back from the normal take off zone and like the other places in Mentawai, when the sets break further out, you should know the dynamics and take off zones because the waves come quite a lot faster and are rounder.

En Telescopes las mejores condiciones se dan con viento de SE y swell del W, marea media y un tamaño entre cinco y seis pies, aguantando bien series de ocho. Empieza a romper con tres pies con un take off asequible y un tubo en la primera sección para después enlazar con buenas secciones donde trazar amplias curvas. Cuando entra un gran swell empieza a romper mucho más atrás de la zona de take off normal y como en todos los lugares de Mentawai cuando las series rompen lejos conviene conocer la dinámica y las zonas de take off porque las olas vendrán bastante más rápidas y tubulares.

Telescopes is a world class left in the north of Sipora, not far from Suicides, in front of Kinilok Point in Mapadegat Bay. Pulau Sipora is the least extensive island but it’s the most developed and the most populated and therefore has the best transport links. If you visit by your own accord, you’ll arrive at the capital Tua Pijat from where you can begin your experience and find cheap boats to take you to the island.

It’s as the name suggests, a cylindrical telescope that opens up little by little in a predictable way and invites you to test your limits, catching bigger waves and going deeper into the barrel each time. It’s a popular wave because it allows a high number of surfers in its line up and it’s also very well located, near other waves such as Scarecrows and Iceland. It breaks over a large, very exposed reef in the middle of the sea but it needs the correct swell to work. If you’re lucky enough to have these conditions this wave is ultra-consistent and easily reaches 200 metres, turning it into one of the best waves in the world. It’s very good because it’s also one of the most accessible and with half the size, it allows intermediate surfers to link various sections.

Se ubica en el Norte de Sipora, a poca distancia al Sur de Suicides, frente al cabo Kinilok en la bahía en Mapadegat. Pulau Sipora es la isla menos extensa, pero es la más desarrollada, poblada y por ello la mejor comunicada, si vas por tu cuenta llegarás a la capital de Tua Pijat, desde allí podrás iniciar tu experiencia y encontrarás barcos baratos para moverte por la isla.

Esta ola, como su nombre indica, es como un telescopio que se va abriendo poco a poco de manera predecible, la verdad es que su dinámica te invitará a probar tus límites colocándote cada vez más profundo en el tubo. Es muy buena porque es una de las más asequibles y, con un tamaño medio, permite que surfers de nivel medio puedan enlazar varias de sus secciones. Es una ola frecuentada, ya que admite un número elevado de surfers en su line-up y además está muy bien situada cerca de otras olas como Scarecrows y Iceland. Rompe a lo largo de un extenso arrecife muy expuesto en medio del mar, pero necesita el swell correcto para funcionar, si tienes la suerte de encontrarte con esas condiciones, esta ola es ultraconsistente y alcanza fácil los 200 metros, convirtiéndose en una de las mejores olas del mundo.
