The Peak is in the west of Donegal Bay, its exposure means it receives any swell from the W and NW, and with a SW swell, the left converts into a wave which seems to be from Indonesia. The best period is from August to October as the water temperature is warmer and the first quality swells begin to enter. As a general rule, the best conditions are with 4 to 6 foot waves, a falling mid tide and E or SE wind. It works from 2 to 6 feet, and sometimes with more than 15 feet, this being the moment for tow-ins.

It’s an A-frame suitable for intermediate and advanced surfers and can occasionally be world class. The left is normally more powerful and the conditions vary quite a lot depending on the size. When it’s less than 6 feet it only works with low tide and the left is faster, longer and barrelling whereas the right is also good but shorter and more permissive. With more than 6 feet it works with all tides, the left is fast and above all, if the swell comes more from the N, it tends to close. With big swells the right is better, it’s hollow in the first section and longer, reaching the boat quay.

Despite its latitude, summer in Ireland can be surprisingly warm, thanks to the phenomenon that is the Gulf Stream which crosses the Atlantic Ocean diagonally from the Caribbean towards the north Atlantic. This makes the water on the west coast of Ireland to be warmer than, for example, Portugal which is located nearer the equator. Irish winters are hard and a 5 mm wetsuit, gloves, hood and booties are necessary. In autumn and spring you’ll need a 4 mm at least and 3 or 2 mm in the summer. Take care of the rocks, currents, sea urchins and huge tidal changes.

The Peak se encuentra en la expuesta al oeste bahía de Donegal, eso significa que recibe cualquier swell procedente del oeste y noroeste, destacar el swell de suroeste porque transforma la izquierda en una ola que parece traída de Indonesia. La temporada más recomendable es desde agosto hasta octubre, fechas que coinciden con la mayor temperatura del agua y los primeros swell de calidad. Por regla general las mejores condiciones se dan con olas de 4 a 6 pies con la marea media empezando a bajar y con viento de E o SE. Funciona de 2 a 10 pies, en raras ocasiones más de 15 pies, siendo el momento para aquellos que practican Tow-in.

Es un A-frame para surfers con nivel medio y avanzado, en ocasiones puede alcanzar clase mundial. La izquierda normalmente tiene más potencial, y las condiciones varían bastante según el tamaño, por debajo de seis pies solo funciona con marea baja, siendo la izquierda más rápida, larga y tubular, la derecha es muy buena también pero más corta y mas permisiva. Con más de seis pies el Peak funciona con todas las mareas, la izquierda se vuelve demasiado rápida e incluso sobretodo si el swell viene más del norte tiende a cerrar, con mar grande la derecha se hace mejor, más larga y hueca en la primera sección y llega hasta el Boat Quay.

Los meses de verano en Irlanda a pesar de las alta latitud son sorprendentemente templados, esto es gracias al fenómeno que ocasiona la corriente oceánica del golfo, esta atraviesa el océano Atlántico desde el Caribe en diagonal hacia el Atlántico norte haciendo que en esas fechas la temperatura del agua en la costa oeste irlandesa sea aquí mas cálida, por ejemplo que en Portugal situado en latitudes más templadas. El invierno es duro para surfear en Irlanda, se necesita un 5 mm, guantes, gorro y escarpines, en otoño y primavera mínimo un 4 mm y en verano un 3 mm o incluso 2 mm puede ser suficiente. Cuidado con las rocas, las corrientes, los erizos y los enormes cambios de marea.

Northwest Ireland is one of the most consistent places in Europe and home to The Peak which is situated in the small town of Bundoran, south of the popular Donegal Bay. This area has become more popular over the past few years and Bundoran has become Ireland’s most important surf destination. Surfing and discovering this place is a unique experience, it’s like time travelling and integrating yourself in ancient Celtic lands. The weather is often cold and wet but the warmth of the locals and the quality of the waves are incredible. Some call it ‘Cold Indonesia’, the water isn’t turquoise and there are no palm trees but it has a power that will surprise most.

Bundoran is an ideal place to go all year round, it’s one of the most touristic places in Ireland and you’ll find everything there, restaurants, supermarkets, bed and breakfasts, surf shops, car parks, and most importantly there are good, consistent waves with a multitude of peaks and reefs all year round. The nearest airports are Donegal Airport and the International Airports of Belfast and Dublin. It takes around two and a half hours to get there from Dublin along the N3, and two hours from Belfast along the M1 and the A4. There is also a daily bus connection from Dubin Airport to Ballyshannon, which is just four miles from Bundoran.

At the beginning of the seventies the first surfers at Bundorn were Ian Hill, the Britton brothers, Dave Pierce, Grant Robinson and Roci Allen. Nowadays there are many good local riders such as Cain Kilcullen, who they say is currently the best Irish surfer, Gabe Davies, Ian Battrick, Ritchie Fitzgerald and Matt Britton to name a few. You may find some of them hanging out at the local, Maddens Bridge Bar, on the main street. It gets packed in the summer and the take off zone is very narrow. Everyone knows who is and who isn’t a local, however the locals are kind so make sure you respect them. There are some other very good waves near to The Peak such as Tullan Strand, 3D, Inside Left and Tullaghan. If you head in the direction of Sligo and turn right towards Duff River Bridge you’ll find the Mullaghmore wave which is growing in fame internationally. It’s a spot with brutal lefts above a reef which has become popular over the past few years for its enormous barrels. It works from 10 feet and with high tide.

El noroeste de Irlanda es uno de los lugares mas consistentes de Europa, aquí se encuentra The Peak, situado en la pequeña ciudad de Bundoran al sur de la popular Bahia de Donegal. Una zona donde el surfing ha crecido mucho en los últimos años y ha convertido Bundoran en el destino de surf más importante de Irlanda. Surfear y descubrir estas tierras será una experiencia, única y diferente, es como viajar en el tiempo e integrarse en estas milenarias tierras celtas. Puede parecer que el ambiente es frío y lluvioso, pero la verdad es que el calor de sus gentes y la calidad de las olas son increíbles. Algunos llaman a este lugar la ‘Indonesia Fría’, no hay agua turquesa, ni palmeras pero hay un potencial que sorprenderá a más de uno.

Bundoran es un lugar ideal durante todo el año, es una de las ciudades más turísticas de Irlanda, encontrarás de todo, restaurantes, supermercados, Bed&Breakfast, parking, surf-shops; y lo más importante, durante todo el año hay buenas olas y consistencia en una multitud de picos y arrecifes a muy poca distancia entre ellos. Los aeropuertos más cercanos son, el Aeropuerto de Donegal, y los Internacionales de Belfast y Dublín. Desde Dublín hay 2 horas y media por la N3 y desde Belfast 2 horas pasando primero por la M1 y luego por la A4. Por otro lado decir que hay un bus diario desde Dublín a Ballyshannon, a 4 millas de Bundoran, puedes coger el bus a Ballyshannon desde el mismo Aeropuerto de Dublín.

A principios de los años sesenta los primeros que entraron al agua en Bundoran fueron Ian Hill y los hermanos Britton, Dave Pierce, Grant Robinson y Roci Allen; actualmente son muchos y bueno los riders locales, destaca Cain Kilcullen, el que dicen es el mejor surfista irlandes del momento, además de Gabe Davies, Ian Battrick, Ritchie Fitzgerald o Matt Britton. Alguno de ellos podría estar en la calle principal donde esta uno de los locales con más tradición, Maddens Bridge Bar, si quieres conocer el surfing local este es el sitio. En verano hay mucha gente, la zona de take off es muy estrecha y ahí se reunen todos los que surfean en esta pequeña ciudad, todos se conocen y saben quién es local y quién no, así que intenta ser educado con los locales que por regla general son amables.

Cerca de The Peak hay muy buenas olas como Tullan Strand, 3D, Inside Left y Tullaghan. Muy cerca en dirección a Sligo y hacia la derecha por Duff River Bridge encontrarás la cada vez más mediática a nivel internacional ola de Mullaghmore, un spot de izquierdas brutales sobre arrecife que en los últimos años esta de moda por las enormes tubos que es capaz de generar, empieza a funcionar a partir de 10 pies y marea alta.
