This wave breaks over an exposed reef and is better during the winter when the winds are lighter and the water is warmer. Red Bluff works with overhead to double overhead S – SW swells and the well shaped point converts the ocean into a machine of barreling left handers that break over a sharp, shallow, urchin ridden reef. The technical and tight drop in the takeoff leads to thick, powerful barrels before finsihing in a deep channel which is notoriously sharky. It shows its best face at mid tide with SW swell, the ideal size being six-to-eight feet but it can hold up to ten, and SE wind, although it can handle the prevailing SW winds.

Red Bluff es un reef break expuesto de mucha consistencia en invierno, cuando disminuye el viento y puedes disfrutar de agua caliente. El drop del takeoff es muy técnico y ajustado, si hay tamaño te introduce en un tubo muy rápido y potente que termina en el canal donde la presencia de tiburones no es algo raro. Muestra su mejor cara con swells del SW y vientos del SE, funciona mejor con media marea, el tamaño ideal es de 1,5 a 2,5 m, aunque atento, aguanta más de 3 metros perfectamente, con esas condiciones el surf aquí es brutal y uno de los más heavys del mundo.

Red Bluff, a.k.a. The Bluff is an iconic left point break in Northwest Western Australia. It’s situated in the Coral Coast region in an area called Gnaraloo which is today one of the best surfing destinations in the world. Gnaraloo is a 14 hour drive north of Perth and 150 km from the nearest city, Carnavon, you’ll need a car to move around the area as the best spots are at lonely virgin beaches and away from everything. You’ll have to be self-sufficient, and take everything you need as this part of the world is very remote and inhospitable for the unprepared but it’s worth going for the wildlife, incredible fishing and above all, the huge, powerful wild waves. To get there from Carnarvon you need to head north. Take the Blowholes exit and carry on north towards Red Bluff at Quobba station. It’s approximately 6 km south of Gnaraloo. Don’t attempt the drive without a proper 4WD!

Bring your shortboard and more importantly your best semi-gun. Due to the size and power of the waves, this spot is for experienced surfers so it’s a good idea to watch a local paddle out before you attempt it. It’s advisable to wear booties. It’s a bit crowded in the winter but the local vibe is pretty cool and campfires in groups after a good surf are common practice.

The Red Bluff es uno de los destinos de surf más remotos del mundo, se sitúa en la región de Coral Coast, una zona llamada Gnaraloo que hoy día es sin duda uno de los mejores destinos a nivel mundial para la práctica del surf, un lugar virgen con una impresionante vida salvaje, de increíble pesca y salvajes olas que pueden alcanzar mucho tamaño y fuerza, haciendo que este lugar sea exclusivo para surfers experimentados. Trae bastantes tablas y por supuesto tu mejor semigun porque lo vas a necesitar.

Se localiza a 14 horas de conducción al norte de Perth y a 150 km de la ciudad más cercana, Carnarvon, en la costa noroeste australiana. Desde Carnavorn conduce al norte y sal en Blowholes, continua al norte hasta Red bluff en Quobba station, aproximadamente a 6 km al sur de Gnaraloo. Es casi obligatorio moverse con 4X4. Necesitarás un coche para moverte por la zona puesto que los mejores spots se encuentran en playas vírgenes aisladas y alejadas de todo. Tendrás que ser autosuficiente y llevar contigo todo aquello que puedas necesitar. La aventura te estará esperando en este surf trip de ensueño por Australia Occidental. Encontrarás pocas personas aún en los mejores días y conocerás a los ‘Sandgropers’ australianos de la ‘north west coast’, locales muy agradables. Prepárate para fogatas y barbacoas de buen pescado en grupo después de las buenas sesiones de surf porque aquí son de lo más normal.
